Sky and Virgin Media Wave Goodbye to Disney UK TV Channels

Disney has confirmed that it will soon no longer be possible to watch their linear TV channels via Sky (Sky Broadband) or Virgin Media after carriage talks failed to produce an agreement. Instead the channels will be moved to the company’s new Disney+ video streaming service from 1st October 2020.

Government to Splash £500m on OneWeb Broadband Satellites

The UK Government will reportedly invest around £500m (equity) into British-registered space company OneWeb as part of a wider private-sector consortium bid. The firm has been busy building a global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast broadband, but as part of the deal it may have to deliver GPS too.

New customers of UK broadband ISP Talk Talk Business may be pleased to learn that they too can now access the provider’s latest “best-ever” Wi-Fi Hub (Sagemcom F@st 5364) router, which was first launched for their residential subscribers (here) all the way back in May 2018. At least it looks identical to us.

Complaints Handler Ombudsman Services Returns to Normal

Consumer complaints handler firm Ombudsman Services, which is an Ofcom approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider for UK broadband ISPs and mobile operators, has announced that it will return to normal requirements and timelines at the beginning of July 2020, following the COVID-19 crisis.

O2 UK Finally Refunds Mobile Customers.. AFTER 15 YEARS

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has refunded a number of their customers for over-charging following a double “billing issue“, which wouldn’t be nearly so interesting if it wasn’t for the fact that the problem itself occurred over 10 years ago (i.e. some refunds are from as far back as 15 years). Better late than never? That’s a stretch.

Ofcom Consults on Openreach UK Copper Retirement Process

The UK telecoms regulator has today opened a short consultation on their proposal to push back some key decisions regarding the retirement process for Openreach’s (BT) copper lines in favour of fibre optic broadband. In short, Ofcom wants to see a bit more FTTP roll-out take place first (for experience), before they set out a final plan.

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE has today reintroduced converged pricing on their fixed line ADSL, FTTC and G.fast based home broadband plans, which in simple terms means that the operator’s existing Pay Monthly mobile customers will pay less than somebody who just orders their fixed line service by itself.

Emtelle Signs £10m 2-Year Contract Extension with Gigaclear UK

Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has signed a 2 year extension contract with Emtelle, which is said to be worth £10m and will enable the internet provider to keep fuelling their deployments of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology with kit from the fibre manufacturer.

79,000 Premises in Wales Remain Without Superfast Broadband UPDATE

The Welsh Government (WG) has today issued a short update on their various broadband schemes, which among other things reveals that 79,000 properties (categorised as “white premises”) still do not have access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) and won’t benefit from any future roll-out plans within the next 3 years.

The city of Aberdeen in Scotland is about to get a second “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network after Openreach (BT) announced that it had finally started to roll-out in the area, which is already home to an existing deployment by rival Cityfibre (Gigafast Broadband).

TUC – Invest in UK Broadband and Create 40,000 Telecoms Jobs

A new report by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which is based on research from Transition Economics, has called on the UK Government to “fast track” spending on projects such as gigabit broadband, green technology, transport and housing in order to deliver a 1.24 million jobs boost by 2022 (40,000 in telecoms alone).

Openreach Confirm G.fast Broadband Rollout Paused Until 2021 UPDATE

Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they do not intend to build their G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network to any more UK homes until April 2021. The service has been on pause since last year, when the operator re-focused toward gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

44% of UK Online Multiplayer Gamers Still Complain About Lag

A new survey of 1,000 UK video gamers, which was commissioned by full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic, has found that 44% of adult respondents named “the internet lagging” as the most infuriating aspect of online gaming, while 27% also complained about other players’ slow online speeds.

New WightFibre Programme Brings FTTP to Community Hubs
