UPDATE8 Gov Pledge 95% of UK to Get Fixed Superfast Broadband by 2017

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury for the United Kingdom, Danny Alexander, has today published full details of the country’s future infrastructure spending plans (‘Investing in Britain’s Future‘). Included in this is a £250 million commitment to ensure fixed line superfast broadband reaches 95% of the population by 2017 (99% by 2018 with wireless).

EE 4G Rollout Expands to Cover More than 55% of the UK Population

Mobile network operator EE (4GEE) has announced that its superfast 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network can now reach 55% of the United Kingdom’s population across 85 towns and cities.

Budget Internet provider Direct Save Telecom has today claimed to be the “first telecom provider in the UK to launch a no-contract unlimited family broadband” package, which costs £16.95 a month but a minimum term of 28 days is still attached.

UPDATE UK ISP EE Hit by Ofcom for Most Home Broadband Complaints

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK (Orange) has once again been shamed by Ofcom’s latest quarterly customer complaints report (Q1-2013), which highlighted their home broadband service as having the largest number of disgruntled customers among all of the biggest ISPs. But they did improve from Q4-2012.

BTOpenreach has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the first trial of its new VDSL Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) technology in the United Kingdom, which could help ISPs to deliver better FTTC broadband speeds over longer copper lines, is now set to begin at the end of July or early August 2013.

South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire UK Reveal First BT Fibre Rollout Areas

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today fined broadband and phone provider Supatel Limited (TimeTalk) £60,000 for mis-selling (slamming) after they were found guilty of having switched 83 customers from one ISP to another without the individuals knowledge.

UPD £18.06m Brings BT Fibre Broadband to Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire

BT has today signed a new state aid supported £18.06 million deal to make fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P) services available to more than 90% of premises in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire (England, UK) by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

UPDATE EU Study of Real Broadband ISP Speeds Shows Mixed UK Results

Europe has published its first study into the actual broadband internet speeds experienced by 9,104 homes across the continent (30 countries and over 250 ISPs), which reveals that the average peak time download rate for DSL (ADSL) services is just 7.19Mbps (Megabits), rising to 33.08Mbps for Cable and 41.02Mbps for fibre optic (FTTC/H).

Broadway Partners Challenge BT in UK Rural Areas via £10m Broadband Plan

Premier League to Force UK ISPs into Blocking FirstRow1 Website

The Premier League (Football) is to follow the tactics used by other Rights Holders (e.g. BPI and MPA) and intends to seek a court order that would force broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom to block their customers from being able to access the Sweden-based FirstRow1 website.
