GCHQ UK Caught Snooping on Transatlantic Fibre Optic Connections

The Government’s Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), which aims to provide intelligence, protect information and “keep our society safe and successful“, has been caught tapping into at least some of the world’s transatlantic fibre optic cable links that keep us all connected via the Internet and via phone calls.

Huawei Expect 5G Mobile Broadband to Give Everybody Speeds of 10Gbps

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has said that the next generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband technology, which it says should “emerge in the market between 2020 and 2030“, will ultimately allow “every person” to access wireless internet download speeds of 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) via their mobile operator.

Fibre Optic Connections Boost World Broadband Users to 654.6 Million

The latest Point Topic report for Q1-2013 reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers has grown by 2% (12.5 million) in the quarter to hit 654,600,000 (up from 643.7m in Q4-2012), which remains fairly flat but continues to be fuelled by the rollout of new superfast fibre optic (FTTH, FTTC etc.) connectivity.

The City of Edinburgh Council (Scotland) has submitted a revised plan for improving the city’s telecoms infrastructure, which comes after EU competition concerns prevented a majority of the £10.7 million allocated through the government’s £150m Urban Broadband Fund from being used to build a new fibre optic broadband network.

Three UK and EE Come Top in 2013 Mobile Broadband Road Trip Test

Mobile operator’s Three UK and EE have come top in the latest annual study of roaming Mobile Broadband performance. Overall Three UK delivered the highest peak internet download speed of 8.66Mbps (Megabits per second), while EE delivered the best average speed of 3.43Mbps. But once again it’s bad news for Vodafone.
