Mobile network operator EE (4GEE) has announced that its superfast 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network can now reach 55% of the United Kingdom’s population across 85 towns and cities.
The operator’s latest roll-out update confirms that the service has today been switched-on in the following towns and cities: Aldershot, Basildon, Basingstoke, Bracknell, Hitchin, Horsham, Leatherhead, Letchworth, Stevenage, Warrington and Weston-Super-Mare.
Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE, said:
“Today’s launch sees us continue to extend the reach of superfast 4G mobile to more consumers and businesses across the UK, from Warrington to Weston-super-Mare. With double-speed 4G launching this summer, as well as Shared 4GEE plans and Pay-As-You-Go 4G Mobile Broadband, we continue to innovate and enable the best possible digital experience for our customers.”
The new deployment appears to be on-target and EE’s “double-speed” boost (details), which aims to offer PEAK speeds of up to 80Mbps (though this must be shared between users), is currently expected to be introduced to 10 cities during the summer (Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield).
EE are currently aiming for 98% of the UK population to be covered by the end of 2014. It also hopes to have one million 4G customers by the end of 2013. But rival operators will shortly begin to introduce alternative 4G networks via the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands.
