Hull ISP KC Launch 350Mbps Lightstream Fibre Optic Broadband Service

Hull and East Riding’s (Yorkshire, UK) incumbent internet and phone provider, KC, has today expanded their existing superfast KCLightstream fibre optic (FTTP) broadband services by launching the “fastest fully fibre broadband service available in the UK” (KCLightstream 350) with “guaranteed” speeds of up to 350Mbps (Megabits per second).

Virgin Media UK Lists 82 London Tube Stations for its FREE WiFi Service

Cable operator Virgin Media has today revealed a list of 82 London Underground Tube Stations that will receive an upgrade to its free public wireless internet access (WiFi) service before the end of July. A further 38 (total 120), including “deep-level” stations, will be added by the end of 2012

UK High Court Clears Golden Eyes Internet Piracy Letters for O2 UK Users

London’s High Court yesterday helped Golden Eye International, a firm that holds numerous film copyrights and is linked to the UK’s Ben Dover porn brand, to finalise the format of its controversial P2P internet piracy settlement letters. Thousands of O2’s broadband ISP customers (those accused of copyright infringement) can now expect to receive the letters, albeit not without some crucial limitations.

German ISP Delivers World Record Internet Download Speed of 4700Mbps

A German cable operator, Kabel Deutschland (KD), claims to have become the “first” in the world to “successfully achieve” a broadband download speed of 4700Mbps (Megabits per second) during one of their real world field tests (more bandwidth than many current PC and laptops could process).

Cisco VNI Report Predicts Quadruple Surge in World Internet Traffic by 2016

Global networking giant Cisco has released its latest annual 2012 Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast and revealed that worldwide IP (internet) traffic, fuelled by demand for online video and IPTV content, will hit 1.3 Zettabytes in 2016 (annual total). That’s roughly four times larger than the total amount of global IP traffic generated in 2011 (369 Exabytes).

UK ISP Sky Broadband Blocks Internet Piracy Website The Pirate Bay

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) yesterday become the latest internet provider to block its UK customers from being able to access The Pirate Bay website, which follows an identical move by both Virgin Media and Orange UK. Several other operators, including O2, TalkTalk and BT, are expected to follow suit within the next couple of weeks.

UK Consumer Panel Seeks Clear Targets to Tackle Broadband Digital Divide

The Communications Consumer Panel (CCP), an independent watchdog that claims to support consumer interests in the UK telecoms industry, has released a new report that calls for “clear targets” to help get more people online and for the government to “strike a better balance between funding for broadband infrastructure and supporting people online“.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has confirmed that the full commercial launch of its “premium” ultrafast 330Mbps (Megabits per second) capable fibre optic (FTTP) broadband service will take place on 2nd July 2012, at which point it will be available for everybody to order (provided you’re one of the lucky few who can actually get it).

Most UK Mobile Broadband Users Could Swap Providers over Skype Blocks

A new study by Rebtel, which claims to be the largest independent VoIP (Voice-over-IP) provider after Skype, has found that almost 60% of UK Smartphone users would be prepared to switch Mobile Broadband networks if operators continue to impose traffic blocks or slow down access to online voice calling and other internet streaming services.

ASA Ban Utility Warehouse Ad for UK Cheapest Broadband Bundle Claim

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” circular advert for the Utility Warehouse (Telecom Plus plc) ISP after it claimed to offer the “UK’s cheapest” home phone and broadband bundle. Identical claims were also made for the provider’s mobile tariffs, gas and electricity.

European Commission Pledges to Stiffen ISP Net Neutrality Rules

The European Commission (EC) has responded to BEREC’s final report into Net Neutrality (the principal of treating all internet traffic as equal), which criticised fixed line broadband ISPs and Mobile Broadband operators over a lack of transparency, by proposing to stiffen industry guidelines through “strong and targeted action” and deliver more “effective consumer choice“.

Congestion Problems Hit Spotify Access for UK Virgin Media Broadband Users

Cable giant Virgin Media has blamed a Spotify access problem on peak-time congestion that occurs between the ISPs network and the music streaming services data centre. The situation, which dragged on for the best part of two weeks, made the Spotify service effectively unusable for many of Virgin’s superfast broadband customers.

Ofcom Opens Review of UK ISP ADR Consumer Complaints Handlers

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has launched a new review into its two Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) consumer complaint handlers – Ombudsman Services (OS) and the Communications and Internet Services Adjudication Scheme (CISAS) – after it was revealed that the system could sometimes impose unfair financial penalties against broadband ISPs.

BT On Track to Offer 500k London UK WiFi Hotspots for 2012 Olympics

BT has today confirmed that it’s still on-track to offer 500,000 wireless internet access hotspots across London in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be mostly delivered via their FON wifi community of retail broadband ISP subscribers. The telecoms operator claims that 475,000 hotspots are already live in Greater London.
