Optical fibre ISP Hyperoptic, which is focused on connecting big residential and office buildings inside 28 large UK cities and towns, has launched a new range of 20Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps capable standalone FTTP/B broadband packages that are aimed squarely at connecting students.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their ultrafast broadband and TV network is being expanded to reach a further 50,000 homes and businesses in Northern Ireland, with the roll-out already started in Ballykelly, Bangor, Limavady, Newtownards, Strabane and Artigarvan.

The Post Office’s telecoms division has today announced that they’ve completed the acquisition of Fuel Broadband from previous owner New Call Telecom. Apparently the “seamless” migration progress concluded yesterday and 60,000 customers have now been moved.

The United Kingdom’s national cable operator, Virgin Media (Liberty Global), has today followed other ISPs by announcing a series of annual price hikes for their broadband, phone and / or TV bundles, which will see the price existing customers pay rising by around +4.7% per month.

The Superfast Dorset programme in central southern England has launched a new ‘Community Broadband Fund’, which offers a maximum of £1,500 per eligible premise to help properties in poorly served areas get access to a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) connection.

The UK telecoms regulator has launched a Call for Inputs that seeks feedback on their proposal to harness the 26GHz radio spectrum band for future 5G based fixed wireless and Mobile Broadband technologies. Ofcom has also confirmed their intention to use the 3.6GHz to 3.8GHz band.

In an interesting twist Satellite Solutions Worldwide, which owns the UK and Pan-European Satellite ISP Europasat, has acquired rural fixed wireless broadband provider Quickline for an initial consideration of £5 million (£3m cash and £2m shares). A further £2 million is also be invested to grow the business.

After a chaotic start to the year BT has today published their latest report for Q2 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,286,000 subscribers (up by 19K vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.1 million “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) users (up 170K vs 211K in Q1).
