Shropshire County Council has warned that £11.38 million of additional state aid allocated to the region under the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) extension programme, which seeks to boost the UK’s national fixed line superfast broadband (25Mbps+) coverage target to 95% by 2017, is at risk of being lost due the council’s limited finances.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that customers of their Red 4G plans (including business travellers) will now also be able to make use of “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband connectivity when roaming across Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

The famous British comedian, actor and writer, Simon Pegg (‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘StarTrek’, ‘The World’s End’ etc.), has taken to Twitter in order to have a grumble about BT after the national UK telecoms operator agreed to “hook our street up for broadband“, albeit at a cost of £21,000.

KC Fibre Broadband Rollout Update – 32000 Premises Passed in Hull UK

Telecoms operator KC (KCOM Group), which serves Hull and some other parts of East Yorkshire in England, has confirmed that their superfast 350Mbps capable fibre optic (FTTP/C) Lightstream broadband product has now passed 32,000 homes and businesses with 9,000 customers connected (28% uptake) and more areas confirmed for the future upgrade plan.

A new survey conducted by Samsung UK has found that 37% will choose coffee shops based on the availability of free WiFi rather the quality of the tea or coffee being served. So it’s no surprise to find that 69% of Brits work remotely from coffee shops at least twice a week. But apparently what cafes really need is.. a printer.

UK ISP Sky Broadband Growth Slows to Reach 5.2 Million Subscribers

BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has today published the latest results for Q1-2014, which reveals that their broadband ISP platform has seen a sharp drop in growth after adding +70,000 customers in the quarter to total 5,197,000 (down from +110k in Q4 2013 and +111k in Q3 2013). But is this the shadow of free BTSport content or just a temporary blip.

UPD Virgin Media UK Could Sell Shelved Copper ADSL2 Broadband Business

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has reportedly put up a tentative FOR SALE sign next to the 135,000 customers on their old copper-based Virgin National Broadband (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) platform, which closed to new subscribers in October 2013 (here) and has continued to decline from its peak of 275,900 users in early 2011.

UK Satellite ISP Avonline and Avanti Sign Broadband Improvement Deal

Satellite operator Avanti has signed a new partnership deal with ISP Avonline that should result in the latter being able to introduce a range of new broadband services and a “promise” to give all Avanti-based customers a minimum average download speed of 9Mbps and an upgrade to a “fibre alternative” when it becomes accessible.

BT’s consumer ISP division has confirmed that their new and re-contracting broadband subscribers will continue to benefit from free access to BTSport TV content for a second season and the operator also revealed that around 5 million UK homes now view the service (3 million come direct from BT and the rest via wholesale partners).

London Tube Strike Triggers WiFi Signup Surge for Virgin Media
