The latest monthly performance study of the United Kingdom’s largest seven home broadband ISPs has found that the average download speed in November 2013 was 17.304Mbps (up from 16.842Mbps last month) and the average upload speed climbed to 3.370Mbps (up from 2.896Mbps).

The High Court of Justice in London has ruled that BT infringes upon one of ASSIA’s patents for DSL management technologies, which the telecoms operator allegedly uses as part of their national FTTC (VDSL) based Next Generation Access (NGA) network deployment.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today unveiled a new version (SR102) of their original Sky Hub (SR101) wireless router, which improves upon the old model by being coloured in “stylish black” and integrating a VDSL modem so that customers who adopt their FTTC superfast broadband (Sky Fibre) package no longer need to use a separate modem from BTOpenreach.

The latest Analysys Mason study has claimed that the United Kingdom remains top of the “big five” (EU5) European countries (i.e. France, Germany, Italy and Spain) in terms of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) coverage, take-up, average service speeds and competition. But the wider picture remains more complex.

Internet and phone provider PlusNet, which is a semi-independent sibling of BT, has appointed Andy Baker (Aged 41) to be its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Andy replaces the ISPs current CEO, Jamie Ford, whom is leaving to pursue a role as the Managing Director of IT Services at BT Business.

The Snaresbrook Crown Court has sentenced a corrupt former BT employee and members of a criminal gang to a total of over 32 years in jail after they were found to have colluded over the theft and damage of vital copper broadband and phone cable, which cost the telecoms operator a total of £279,635.00.

The Labour Party has proposed a new multipoint point plan that it believes could help to cut the cost of consumer phone and calling bills across the United Kingdom, which includes a pledge to force BT and other operators into cutting the cost of line rental. It’s the Christmas war of the voucher cards again. New customers who sign-up to a broadband bundle from BT, Virgin Media or TalkTalk are for the next week or two being offered a variety of special account credits or voucher cards with their orders, some of which are worth up to £100 and stack with existing discounts.

Europe’s ITRE Industry Committee yesterday approved a draft law that could help to cut the cost of civil works (e.g. digging up roads to lay new fibre optic cable) when deploying new broadband infrastructure. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have also called for a voluntary “broadband-ready” label on new homes.

The tiny Fell End Broadband project in Ravenstonedale (Cumbria, England) has this week begun deployment of a new fibre optic cable that will be used to connect 58 local premises (these are spread out over an 11km area) to super-fast Internet connectivity.

Network infrastructure developer SSE Telecoms has launched ‘Project Edge’, which will expand the reach of their up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) per customer capable “enterprise-class” fibre optic network to 54 new Points of Presence (PoPs) in most of the United Kingdom’s busiest towns and cities.

The Government’s £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF), which has been stalled for months because BT and local councils have controversially refused to share vital service speed and coverage (SCT) data with bidding altnet ISPs, is still alive in Northumberland (England). Naturally BT is running the project.
