Liv Garfield has confirmed that she will step down from her role as the boss of BTOpenreach during spring 2014 and will instead become the new CEO of water company Severn Trent. Openreach is responsible for maintaining and providing access to BT’s national telecoms and broadband ISP network across the United Kingdom.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has confirmed the launch of a new £25m Internet Safety Campaign with the country’s largest broadband ISPs that aims to help educate parents about how best to keep their children safe from adult Internet content. The move is expected to precede the re-announcement of new Internet filtering measures.

Ofcom has proposed to grant Code Powers (i.e. approval for street works) to four almost identical companies that all exist at the same address and which all plan to expand their existing wireless masts / towers in order to facilitate the roll-out of 4G based Mobile Broadband services by Mobile Network Operators (MNO).

Mobile network operator O2 UK has joined EE by becoming the second provider to introduce a new range of dedicated 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband packages, which are designed for use with Tablets, Laptops or special USB Dongles (Modems). But don’t expect a big data allowance.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today joined TalkTalk to become the latest of the big Internet providers to introduce their own network level filtering (censorship) service at the behest of Government demands. The new solution is a free addition and has been designed to block (censor) websites that contain “adult content“.

Sometimes marketing can be misleading (e.g. calling FTTC or cable lines “fibre optic”) and the same could perhaps be said of 6G Internet, which has just launched a new wireless broadband network in Blackburn (Lancashire, England) and for added confusion fun they’re calling the technology “Air Fibre” (they’re not the first to use that).

PlusNet has cut the cost of its ‘up to’ 16Mbps unlimited standard broadband and free weekend calls package to just £2.75 a month for the first 12 months of service (£9.99 thereafter) and their Unlimited Fibre Broadband (up to 76Mbps) has also dropped to £12.75 for the first 4 months (£19.99 thereafter).
