Telecoms provider EE has taken a leaf of their rivals book and added a £25 M&S voucher to any online orders of their cheap fixed line home broadband and superfast “fibre broadband” packages, which are currently being offered at half price for between the first 12 and 3 months of service.

Budget Internet provider TalkTalk has today followed the other big broadband ISPs by increasing the advertised download speed (“typical speed“) of their standard (ADSL2+) based packages “up to” 16Mbps (Megabits per second) from 14Mbps. But don’t expect to get faster speeds.

BTOpenreach has confirmed that they’re considering the launch of a new special offer that would cut the price of existing superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) installations for ISPs and their end-users, albeit only at specific BT telephone exchanges.

BTOpenreach, which among other things works to maintain and upgrade BT’s national UK telecoms network, has confirmed Sky Broadband as the country’s first ISP to begin trialling a new and possibly cheaper wires only (self-install) variant of its up to 80Mbps capable FTTC superfast broadband technology (i.e. no home engineer visit required).

Ofcom are currently prepping their autumn 2013 pilot of Wi-Fi style White Space (IEEE 802.22) wireless broadband technology and have today launch a new consultation to examine the potential interference issues of using this alongside existing Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) channels in the 470MHz – 790MHz (UHF TV) band.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) claims that its network of 4.9 million internet access customers in the United Kingdom is now handling more than 1 Terabit per second of online data traffic, which equates to over 1000Gbps (Gigabits/sec).

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today highlighted the latest “independent testing” from the University of Bristol and Farncombe, which appears to show that their new SuperHub wireless broadband router offers better home WiFi performance than BT’s equivalent HomeHub4. It also beat similar kit from Sky Broadband and TalkTalk.

Internet provider PlusNet has cut the cost of its up to 76Mbps unlimited superfast fibre (FTTC) and up to 16Mbps unlimited standard broadband packages to £12.99 and £2.99 a month respectively, which will apply for the first 9 months of service (returning to £19.99 and £9.99 thereafter).

The £94m state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has become the latest Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) effort to announce that the first local premises can now gain access to superfast broadband (25Mbps+). The work is currently running three months ahead of schedule.

Entertainment giant Sony (SCEE) has confirmed that its Gaikai video streaming technology, which will allow gamers to remotely play PS3 and PS4 (PlayStation) games by using their existing broadband connection (i.e. without first having to download anything), won’t arrive in the UK and Europe until later due to concerns over the quality of internet access.

The telecoms regulator has today published its latest Telecoms Market Data Tables Q1-2013 update and revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to 21,890,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections (excludes corporate lines), which is up by +210,000 in the quarter (lower than the +356,000 added in Q4-2012).

The Isle of Wight Council (IWC), which represents a small island just off England’s central south coast, finally looks set to name BT as the “preferred supplier” for their state aid supported £3.09 million project to rollout superfast broadband (25Mbps+) after council chiefs received fresh funding assurances from the UK government.

The latest anecdotal August 2013 Broadband.co.uk survey of national fixed line consumer broadband ISP speeds in the United Kingdom has revealed that the average internet download rate is now 17.512Mbps (down from 18.662Mbps in July) and the average upload speed has hit 2.894Mbps (down from 3.338Mbps)

Customers of BT’s Basic Email (Talk 21) service (this was mostly taken alongside older dialup accounts), which was originally due to close on 16th September 2013, have according to the operators FAQ been given an extension to 30th September and will also be able to take one years’ worth of BT Premium Mail (usually priced at £1.60 a month).
