Customers of BT’s Basic Email (Talk 21) service (this was mostly taken alongside older dialup accounts), which was originally due to close on 16th September 2013, have according to the operators FAQ been given an extension to 30th September and will also be able to take one years’ worth of BT Premium Mail (usually priced at £1.60 a month).
In a statement on their website (FAQ Page) BT states that they’ve “listened to your feedback and we’ve extended the deadline by which customers affected have to take action to 30 September 2013“. It should also be noted that customers of BT’s Broadband service can still keep the email address for free by linking it to their existing broadband account.

BTs Basic Email (Talk21) Statement
So we can offer you the best and most secure email, we’ll soon be closing some basic email services. These include BT Basic Mail (also known as Talk21) and the email service that some customers may have retained when they stopped having broadband with BT.
We’ve listened to your feedback and we’ve extended the deadline by which customers affected have to take action to 30 September 2013. We’ll be contacting affected customers, so watch out for the email.
On top of that Thinkbroadband has been told that BT will also now be “giving all talk21 customers the option to move to Premium Mail free for a year” and related users can expect to be contacted about this from 9th September 2013.
But as we always say, it’s better to keep email and websites / web space separate from your ISP as this gives you plenty of flexibility to swap providers without having to worry about losing another vital service.
