A new survey conducted by outdoor accommodation site Pitchup.com has reported that just 17% of holiday and campsites listed on its site offer a public wireless internet (wifi) connection and only 8% support free internet access.

The North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire Councils have today signed a new state aid supported £5.7 million contract that will see BT expand the reach of its “high-speed fibre” broadband (FTTC/P) connectivity to cover 89% of local homes and businesses by the end of Spring 2015. But how many of the 89% will be “superfast” (25Mbps+)?

The £94 million state aid supported joint Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project to make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services available to “around” 90% of local premises by the end of 2016 (original news) has today confirmed the first towns and villages to be upgraded.

BTOpenreach has declared a Serious Incident (SI) after criminals cut through and damaged seven of its vital fibre optic and copper cables in the Oldham (Greater Manchester, England) area just before midnight on Wednesday, which is affecting broadband and phone services across the region.

Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet has announced that the rollout of its own Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband (30Mbps+) network in South Wales has now passed more than 700 homes around the Gower (Swansea) telephone exchange area and for two villages in Monmouthshire.

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury for the United Kingdom, Danny Alexander, has today published full details of the country’s future infrastructure spending plans (‘Investing in Britain’s Future‘). Included in this is a £250 million commitment to ensure fixed line superfast broadband reaches 95% of the population by 2017 (99% by 2018 with wireless).

Mobile network operator EE (4GEE) has announced that its superfast 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network can now reach 55% of the United Kingdom’s population across 85 towns and cities.

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK (Orange) has once again been shamed by Ofcom’s latest quarterly customer complaints report (Q1-2013), which highlighted their home broadband service as having the largest number of disgruntled customers among all of the biggest ISPs. But they did improve from Q4-2012.

The government has today launched a new consultation that reveals how its troubled £150 million “Super-Connected Cities” (Urban Broadband Fund) programme will go about improving business broadband connectivity in selected cities now that EU state aid concerns have forced them to scrap their infrastructure development. BTOpenreach has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the first trial of its new VDSL Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) technology in the United Kingdom, which could help ISPs to deliver better FTTC broadband speeds over longer copper lines, is now set to begin at the end of July or early August 2013.
