The remote Shetland Islands have this week been hit by a double whammy of BT communication problems after copper cable thieves in the North of England (UK) cut a vital fibre optic link that disrupted services to the island for two days. A separate problem at the Aberdeen (Scotland) exchange then knocked out the local coastguard communication system.

The Accounting Officer for the UK governments Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has released a new statement that explains how the funding allocations for each local broadband project are managed and threatens to reclaim grant funding that has been “materially mismanaged” by local authorities.

World Fixed Line Broadband Internet Connections Top 613 Million in Q1 2012

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic UK has today revealed that the world is now home to a total of 612.6 million fixed line broadband ISP subscribers, which is up by 2.7% on the 597 Million recorded in Q4-2011 (growth was slightly lower at 2.6% during Q4-2011); some 42.5% of global net additions came from China alone.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has today suggested that over 500,000 UK homes could be bleeding 4Mbps (Megabits per second) of broadband speed because of “poor in-home setups“, which is allegedly “equivalent to 2.3 Million Mb of speed being lost every second” and they know how to fix it.

The Suffolk County Council (SCC) has optimistically predicted that its local plan, which aims to make superfast broadband ISP speeds of 100Mbps available to everyone in the region by 2020 (shared EU target), could result in a £5bn boost to the local economy.

Some of BT’s superfast broadband (BTInfinity) customers are reporting that an intermittent bug with either their HomeHub 3 (HH3) router or VDSL modem device is causing service speeds to crash, in many cases falling from upwards of 70Mbps (Megabits per second) to sub-1Mbps levels.

The shareholders of European communications provider Vodafone have voted 99% in favour of the £1.044 Billion deal (38p per share) to buy telecoms giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW), which gives the operator plenty of new capacity and room to grow both its existing fixed line and future mobile services.

The European Commission (EC) has released its annual 2012 Digital Agenda Scoreboard, which assesses the progress towards Europe’s broadband delivery targets. It found that just 5.5% of UK lines have adopted a superfast broadband ISP service that can deliver download speeds of 30Mbps+ (EU average 8.5%).

ISPreview.co.uk Website Status Report

ISPreview.co.uk’s web server was given a major software update today, which knocked a few systems offline. Thankfully we were able to repair the most vital ones by midday, although our Jargon Buster and Survey systems remain offline while we attempt to correct for one or two bugs in the configuration. Hyperoptic Attacks BT Opposition to National UK Fibre Broadband Rollout

The boss of urban fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic, Dana Pressman-Tobak, has warned that last week’s comments by BT’s Strategy Director (here), Sean Williams, whom suggested that there was “no business case to support” a full UK roll-out of true fibre broadband (e.g. FTTP) services, could be “very dangerous“.

Ofcom has started a new review of the £2bn UK business telecoms market that proposes several changes to help “meet growing demand for fast data services“. Unfortunately any ISP hoping for improved access to BT’s network of dark fibre lines will be displeased, yet they do propose to regulate 1Gbps+ wholesale leased lines that exist outside London.
