Virgin Media O2 UK Hub 5 Router

Broadband, TV and phone provider Virgin Media (O2) this morning claims to have become the first major UK telecoms provider to enable digital payment systems, Apple Pay and Google Pay, for recurring contract payments. The hope is that this will provide a “convenient alternative to traditional direct debits“.

Rural broadband ISP Voneus has today announced the completion of their effort to roll-out a new “Gigabit Wireless Broadband” (FWA) network across 4,700 homes on Walney Island in Cumbria (England), which they say took only 12-weeks to complete and is thus the “fastest ever deployed worldwide.”

The Kent Police‘s Rural Task Force this week arrested four suspects – three men aged between 37 – 57 and a 14-year-old boy – in connection with the theft of batteries from “telecoms boxes” (i.e. street cabinets used by broadband providers) and a large number of cables from across the South East of England.

A rather basic new study, which was conducted by tech refurbishment firm Back Market, has analysed the number of nuisance call reports coming from 752 area codes across the UK – as reported on who-called.co.uk – to see which ones receive the highest percentage of reports nationally. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its size, London was found to be the area most exploited by cold callers.

Infracapital-backed network builder and UK ISP Ogi, which is investing £245m into the deployment of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across South Wales, has confirmed that they’ve opened up their “Cefnogi” local community support fund for an 8th round of projects.

Global satellite provider SES, which operates a network of nearly 70 satellites that can deliver video and data services to 99% of the world’s population, has today announced an extension of their existing partnership with Sky that will see them continuing to provide capacity to support the Sky Q TV service in the UK and Ireland until the end of 2029.

Hampshire-based broadband ISP Onestream, which sells internet access packages using Openreach’s national network, today claims to have become “the first” internet provider to offer all its customers the “game-changing” option to reuse their existing router when they switch – “saving money and preventing devices becoming electronic waste.”

Mobile network operator EE UK has confirmed to ISPreview that it overcharged a “very small” number of customers, in some cases by hundreds of pounds, for calls that should have been included as part of their bundled allowance. The issue appears to have occurred as part of the operator’s move to adopt a new billing system.

ISP LilaConnect, which following the VX FIBER UK acquisition is now part of Freedom Fibre‘s gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network (here), has today revealed that their fibre coverage in the Staffordshire (England) city of Stoke-on-Trent has now expanded to pass 80% of local premises (103,784).

The Cooperative Network Infrastructure scheme in Tameside, Blackpool, Manchester and Sussex (England), which helps to enable the commercial re-use of existing local authority owned cable ducts and fibre to aid the roll-out of gigabit-capable broadband, has made it easier to share related assets (fibre, street furniture etc.) via a new partnership with AssetHUB.

The Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA) for the Isle of Man, which is a British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland, has fined dominant broadband and telecoms operator Manx Telecom £100,000 for failing to correctly handle Sure’s request for an interconnection with BT’s subsea fibre cable.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today banned a series of website-based adverts for major broadband ISPs and mobile network operators, including BT, EE, Plusnet, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media, after the way they all presented their annual mid-contract price hikes was found to be “misleading“.

After some false starts in the past, residents of the tiny coastal Pembrokeshire (Wales) village of Dale can now finally start enjoying access to a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which is thanks to a deployment by local ISP Voneus that was funded by the government’s gigabit voucher scheme.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve extended and expanded their strategic partnership Sky UK, which among other things means that Sky Stream will launch in EE retail stores, via the their website, and telesales from 15th October 2024; it can also now be taken alongside EE’s home broadband and mobile services.

Alternative network operator and ISP Brsk, which has already built their 2Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover “over” 676,000 UK homes and is in the process of being merged with Netomnia (here), has today announced that their full fibre service is being extended to cover 11,000 premises in the Lancashire town of Colne.

Mobile and broadband ISP Vodafone appears to be preparing to launch a new range of Wi-Fi 7 capable routers and wireless mesh extenders for their fixed line customers in the future, including the Ultra Hub 7 Fibre (FG4278VF), Super Wi-Fi 7 (RP761BVDF) and Ultra HUB7 (DG4278VF). But the details are currently wafer thin.
