File Sanctuary Broadband ISP Logo UK

Internet provider File Sanctuary has just informed us that they’re lowering prices for both new and existing customers on their Openreach based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and SOGEA (FTTC) broadband packages. The ISP is also dropping the price with immediate effect for those who are mid-contract – the opposite of what big ISPs do.

Shropshire-based UK ISP and alternative network provider Exascale, which has already built their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to around 2,000 premises (mostly around Telford and Wrekin), has announced that they’re moving their network build further south.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk, which is currently already in the process of trying to deal with pressure from its existing debts by selling off parts of their business (here and here), managed to secure some vital support at the end of last week after global investment firm KKR agreed to provide them with a £75m non-recourse financing facility.

A new report has claimed that UK ISP Sky Broadband could be providing, as part of wider anti-piracy measures, more private customer and related financial data to rights-holders and / or related third-party groups than many consumers may be either aware of or comfortable with.

Rural focused broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has already built a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 450,000 UK premises passed across 24 counties, has added the large village of Kingsclere in Hampshire to their current rollout plan – adding another 1,500 premises upon completion. The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published the outcome of last year’s reviews into several key urban areas under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which looked to identify which parts of Greater London, Merseyside and Greater Manchester, Newcastle and Birmingham might be left unserved.

Back in 2022 we reported that budget UK broadband ISP TalkTalk was running a new trial (here), which gave “some” existing customers a free automatic upgrade to full fibre (FTTP) broadband – provided they were covered by the network and didn’t already have such a package. But fast-forward 13 months and this is no longer just a trial.

The Sheffield City Council (SCC) has ordered CityFibre to cease its roll-out of a new 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in part of the South Yorkshire (England) City, which occurred after its contractor breached a permit and allowed night works to continue on well past the 11pm limit.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has just announced that their ongoing deployment of a 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network on the London Underground – in partnership with Boldyn Networks and Nokia – has now reached the first West End stations, starting with Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road. Ofcom’s summer 2023 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 52% of the UK (up from 48% in Jan 2023), while 75% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 73%) and 76-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (up from 73-82%).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today become the final operator to reveal their plan for switching off the old 3G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which unlike their rivals is a process that won’t actually begin until 2025. The withdrawal will then occur in phases, with completion by the end of that same year.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that over 21.7 million people experienced “broadband outages” of 3 or more hours over the last year – double 2022’s figure of over 11m. This stopped 15% of respondents from working and is estimated to cost the economy £2bn (lost productivity).

A new Attest survey of 1,000 UK broadband bill payers, which was commissioned by full fibre ISP Hyperoptic and conducted between 25th to 29th August 2023, has claimed that 25% of broadband customers feel furious, upset or confused after speaking to their internet provider, yet just 5% are in the process of switching.

The Welsh Government (WG) has released a new update on the £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which confirms that the “build phase of the contract has now concluded” and a total of 37,497 extra premises (up from 36,869 in Q1) have gained access to their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network.
