Network builder nexfibre, which is working in partnership with broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) – at wholesale – to roll-out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across up to 5-7 million extra UK premises, has today announced the acquisition of full fibre operator Upp in the East of England.

Artists Emma and Hollie of Community Murals have continued their efforts to tackle graffiti on the Isle of Wight, not least by working with councils and broadband ISP WightFibre to paint more of the operator’s full fibre street cabinets with attractive murals. The latest ones can be found in parts of Newport, such as the bus station.

Mobile operator Vodafone and Vodacom have today announced that they’ve agreed a “strategic collaboration” deal to harness Amazon’s future Project Kuiper constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband satellites, which will be used to help extend the reach of their 4G and 5G networks across Europe and Africa.

Some customers of mobile network operators EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 (Virgin Media) are this morning continuing to report problems with making and receiving calls between the aforementioned networks (this also impacted some landline calls), which is an issue that first began around midday on Monday (4th Sept).

Openreach (BT) has this morning confirmed that they’ve formally introduced their long-planned UK wide “stop sell” on sales of new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and related broadband ISP products, which is part of their aim to completely withdraw the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) by December 2025.

The Government has posted an updated State Aid evaluation of the previous ‘Superfast Broadband Programme’ (UK National Broadband Scheme), which specifically examines the final Phase 3 of the project to extend “superfast” (30Mbps+) coverage – run between 2016 and 2022. Suffice to say, it finds various economic and coverage benefits.

The first cohort of at least 90 apprentice full fibre (FTTP) engineers have just begun their training for future telecoms jobs, which forms part of the UK Government’s £108m investment under their Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract with ISP Fibrus – alongside network build partner Viberoptix – in rural Cumbria.

CityFibre has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve recently taken the decision to exit a number of UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband contracts with build partners for a variety of reasons. One of those is known to be the Kier Group, which held various contracts for places such as Weston-Super-Mare, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Worcester etc.

More bad news for any broadband ISPs that were planning to launch faster packages based off Openreach’s forthcoming Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) tiers, which push top download speeds to 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream). The current service pilot has just been extended for yet another 3 months.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has written to the Office of the Telecoms Adjudicator (OTA) as part of efforts to encourage the adoption of changes to improve phone number porting between providers, ideally in time for the revised launch of the One Touch Switch (OTS) migration system for broadband ISPs.
