The UK Government is in the process of publishing the King’s New Year Honours List for 2023, which sees Brendan Dick, the former Director of BT in Scotland (2006-18) and former Chair of Openreach’s Scotland Board (2018-21), picking up an OBE for services to telecommunications in Scotland. SpaceX has launched its first somewhat experimental batch of 54 second generation (GEN2) Starlink Block v2.0 satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which may include a number of improvements to hopefully boost broadband speeds (capacity), coverage, network reliability and deliver mobile phone services from space.

Once again, we’re ending this year by taking a look back to see how the United Kingdom’s position, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband ISP and mobile (4G, 5G) data speeds, has changed since 2021. The UK fell from 35th to 44th for mobile and from 50th to 56th for fixed lines.

Network access provider Openreach has notified UK broadband ISPs about a new Complex to Fibre (C2F) trial, which could result in some copper-line based customers being given a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in situations where it’s available and repairing the existing copper line would be too complex / costly.

As if 2022 wasn’t already devastating enough for the UK cost-of-living, the annual price hikes season is about to hit again for customers of the largest broadband ISPs and mobile operators, which for the second year running is expected to be driven by another huge increase in inflation. Expect hikes of around 14% or more.

Mobile operator Three UK has today followed the earlier announcements from EE and Vodafone by confirming that their 4G (mobile broadband) network is also now live across six new stations on the London Underground (tube) network (here), covering parts of both the Central and Northern lines.

Openreach (BT) has published a summary of their network traffic for 2022, which among other things reveals the average monthly UK data consumption of broadband users across their network for the past year. For example, the busiest month in 2022 was actually January, when a total of 5,701PB (PetaBytes) passed over their network.
