Clive Selley - openreach uk ceo picture 2021

14th Jun, 2022 (54 Comments)

The CEO of network access provider Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, appears to have risked a spat with the UK Government after he complained that the rollout of faster broadband services (e.g. gigabit-capable FTTP) had been slowed by the “tortuous” post-Brexit process of recruiting workers from the EU.

14th Jun, 2022 (11 Comments)

A couple of months ago we revealed that Openreach had launched a review of their FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) product for UK broadband ISPs (here), which proposed to stop selling it later this year. The conclusion of that review has just been published and FoD has been given a reprieve, at least for now.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association and Point Topic have published their 2022 report into the impact of alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks, which reveals that such providers grew their UK cover by 111% in 2021 (up from 110% last year) to cover 5.46 million premises and could hit 11.6m this year.

united kingdom digital connectivity

13th Jun, 2022 (7 Comments)

The UK Government has published their ‘Digital Strategy’, which reflects a “new plan” to grow the “digital economy” (i.e. addressing tech sector skills, investment and infrastructure). But in terms of mobile and broadband infrastructure, it’s largely another re-announcement of existing schemes (not unlike the ‘Levelling Up‘ plan).

copper vs fibre optic openreach engineer

13th Jun, 2022 (24 Comments)

Openreach (BT) has hinted that, for the first time, new installations of their hybrid Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband ISP lines may soon start to shrink, which would partly reflect the rising coverage of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Lit Fibre ONT

13th Jun, 2022 (10 Comments)

Alternative network ISP Lit Fibre, which is building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 500,000 homes by 2026, has today added six new UK towns to their rollout plan. The move brings the total number of homes in towns under deployment to over 200,000 – just 9 months after their first build.

13th Jun, 2022 (21 Comments)

Vodafone today claims to have “overtaken” BT to become the UK’s “largest full fibre broadband provider” via their Gigafast Broadband plans, but they aren’t referring to customer figures (1 million). Instead, this reflects the fact that they now sell gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plans via both Openreach and CityFibre.

11th Jun, 2022 (4 Comments)

The Essex County Council in England has published a new Digital Strategy document, which among other things sets out their plans to ensure that – come 2025 – “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) will cover “all premises“, while “gigabit-capable broadband” should reach 85% and 4G becomes available to 99% (geographic).
