Alternative broadband providers are about to begin a new trial that will, for the first time, grant their engineers the ability to replace an existing copper dropwire on an existing Openreach pole (telegraph pole) with a new optical fibre one for gigabit-capable broadband, albeit only under certain circumstances.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today switched on what they claim is the country’s first wind and solar-powered 4G mobile phone masts, which went live as part of a new trial in rural Pembrokeshire (Wales). The new technology is intended to help cover “not-spots” in the most remote and inaccessible locations.

Openreach CEO Appears to Blame Brexit for Pace of Broadband Build UPDATE

The CEO of network access provider Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, appears to have risked a spat with the UK Government after he complained that the rollout of faster broadband services (e.g. gigabit-capable FTTP) had been slowed by the “tortuous” post-Brexit process of recruiting workers from the EU.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association and Point Topic have published their 2022 report into the impact of alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks, which reveals that such providers grew their UK cover by 111% in 2021 (up from 110% last year) to cover 5.46 million premises and could hit 11.6m this year.

The Essex County Council in England has published a new Digital Strategy document, which among other things sets out their plans to ensure that – come 2025 – “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) will cover “all premises“, while “gigabit-capable broadband” should reach 85% and 4G becomes available to 99% (geographic).
