Smaller UK Altnet ISPs form Group to Challenge BT for Public Broadband Funds

The Independent Networks Cooperative Association (INCA), which works to support the development of next generation internet access around the UK, has announced the forming of a new group of smaller ISPs that could challenge BT’s apparent dominance of the publicly funded superfast broadband roll-out. Consumer Focus has today confirmed that Golden Eye International, which holds copyrights for adult films and is linked to the UK’s Ben Dover brand, will shortly begin sending the first of 2,845 internet piracy claim letters to O2’s UK broadband customers. But this figure is much smaller than their original target.

The Welsh Government (WG) has today surprised nobody by awarding its £425m contract for the Next Generation Broadband Wales tender to BT. But of course it would as the telecoms giant has been the only bidder since January 2012 (here) when rival Fujitsu UK “voluntarily” withdrew due to the “risk levels“.

OECD Ranks UK 8th in its Fixed Broadband Rankings of 34 Countries

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which includes 34 countries that claim to support democracy and a market economy, has ranked the UK 8th in its latest Q4-2011 fixed wired broadband rankings, with 33.3 subscribers per 100 inhabitants. The communications regulator, Ofcom, has released its annual 2012 Communications Market Report (CMR), which covers almost every conceivable variable of the UK’s media and telecom industries. In particular it reveals that 60% of UK homes can now access superfast broadband ISP services (up from 53% a year ago) but uptake is still low.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has rejected an attempt by Virgin Media to have rival Sky Broadband’s claim of offering a “totally unlimited broadband” package banned from its TV, press and website promotions. Meanwhile Sky succeeded in having several adverts for Virgin’s TiVo service banned.

ISP TalkTalk Spends GBP200k to Upgrade Broadband in West Norfolk UK

Budget internet and phone operator TalkTalk (AOL) has reportedly spent £200,000 on an upgrade of their unbundled broadband (LLU) services at several telephone exchanges in West Norfolk, which includes Middleton, Terrington St Clement, Hunstanton and Heacham.
