The government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has revealed that they’ve made some tweaks to the state aid funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts for Teesdale (Lot 4.01) and North Northumberland (Lot 34.01), which were both awarded to alternative network ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) during 2022 (here and here).

Network operator Openreach (BT) has named Exeter engineer Mari Owen (40), who installs full fibre (FTTP) broadband around Devon and Cornwall in South West England, as their ‘Engineer of the Year 2024‘ for her “outside the box” approach to problem-solving and ability to tackle “some of the most complex and diverse jobs“.

Hampshire-based network builder and ISP toob, which is rolling out a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of South England, has expanded their availability to include the Bedfordshire town of Luton, as well as the cities of Cambridge (Cambridgeshire) and Leicester (Leicestershire). But this will be via their partnership with Cityfibre (not own build).

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has today announced that they’ve “completed” their planned roll-out of a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to the Borders area, which has covered 25,000 rural premises. This is a big chunk of the 118,000 they already cover across the North of England and Scotland (up from 115k on 28th Aug 2024).

Business focused UK broadband ISP, IT and Cloud solutions provider FluidOne has today become the latest operator to harness G.Network’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in Central London via a new wholesale agreement, which follows similar deals with other ISPs like Spitfire and Cerberus Networks.

Business ISPs Redcentric and Talk Straight (aka – Schools Broadband) have today announced that they’ve joined the Fibre Cafe‘s (Strategic Imperatives) connectivity aggregation platform, which with both combined should bring an additional 24,500 business connections to the platform.

Alternative network operator and ISP Connect Fibre, which aims to cover 100,000 premises across the East of England with their gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network, has this morning announced that they will be the first UK internet provider to deploy TP-Link’s co-branded Wi-Fi 7 routers to customers. A new 2Gbps package is also being launched.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that the rural village of Llanbrynmair in Powys (Wales) can lay claim to being the “first telephone exchange area in the UK” on their network to have 100% Full Fibre broadband coverage, meaning every single home and property in the village can now access their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines.

Some 10,000 premises in Nottinghamshire (England) have suffered a disruption to their broadband and phone services after Openreach’s (BT) network was “maliciously damaged” by criminals. The details are currently unclear, although the fact that the operator has to replace around 700 metres of cable suggests copper theft may be the cause.

The CEO of alternative broadband operator MS3, Guy Miller, has confirmed to Richard Tang (CEO of ISP Zen Internet), in a new interview, that they’ve just begun a trial with KCOM in Hull that will allow them to deploy their full fibre (FTTP) lines by harnessing some of the incumbent’s existing poles and ducts – potentially reducing community complaints.

London-registered network operator EXA Infrastructure has today launched its new Managed Fibre Network (MFN) service to “address market demands for increased connectivity and shorter service delivery times“, which is also said to provide the “benefits of dark fibre and equipment ownership“, albeit without the usual costs of in-house delivery.

The UK Government (DSIT) has published an evaluation report into the c.£6.2 million “Fibre in Water” trial (Project TAWCO), which tested the deployment of fibre optic (FTTP) cables through a live water mains (used for drinking water) but, as we previously reported (here), ended up being stalled due to several issues.

Network operator CityFibre has given ISPreview an update on the effort to upgrade their GPON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network for ISPs to XGS-PON, which can handle broadband speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second). However, not much progress seems to have been made since the end of 2023, but it is still moving forward.

A small but growing number of O2 UK’s (Virgin Media) mobile customers have reported that the operator has assigned an Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) address to their connections, although in most cases the IP address itself is not fully functional (certainly doesn’t work on data / mobile broadband connections).
