Eastbourne-based network operator and ISP Lightning Fibre Ltd, which was busy deploying a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Sussex and Kent in England, fell into administration last week – only a few days after the company cancelled £39.3m worth of shares.

Network operator and UK gigabit broadband ISP toob, which is currently in the process of investing £7.5m to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 19,000 homes in the Hampshire (England) town of Fleet, has removed several streets from its plan after locals objected to their use of poles.

The first retail broadband ISPs have begun to give their reactions to Virgin Media’s recent change of strategy (here), which will see them open up their existing fixed line network to wholesale via a new business (NetCo). Most internet providers have welcomed the move, but some are sceptical of NetCo’s ability to match Openreach (BT).

A new internet provider and alternative network builder called Brighton Fibre, which spent most of 2023 operating at a small scale in stealth mode, has finally decided to go public with more information about the new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network that they’re deploying in East Sussex.

O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today become the second major UK mobile operator, after Vodafone, to switch-on a commercial 5G Standalone (SA) network in the UK, which will deliver faster mobile broadband speeds (inc. latency) and more service flexibility. The service has initially gone live in parts of 14 cities and comes at “no extra” cost to customers.

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today awarded the local £16.6m (state aid) contract for East Gloucestershire in England to ISP Gigaclear, which will aim to extend their full fibre network to around 4,400 additional premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

The UK’s independent public spending watchdog, the National Audit Office (NAO), has today published a new report into £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile / broadband cover to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025), which finds that it’s “behind schedule” and at risk of cost overruns.
