Civil engineering (utilities contractor) firm OCU Group appears to have established a new Stockport-based company called Artemis Fibre (15129999), which sounds as if it might be looking to deploy and operate its own UK full fibre (FTTP broadband, Dark Fibre and Ethernet) network to help serve the needs of their clients.

After a lengthy pilot programme, Openreach (BT) has finally revealed the commercial launch date and final pricing for their faster Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tiers, which from 1st April 2024 will make it possible for UK ISPs to push their top download speeds to 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both 120Mbps upstream) to consumers.

Scottish ISP Lothian Broadband (LBN), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of East Lothian, the Highlands and Fife, has announced that their network rollout is now being expanded across rural parts of the Black Isle area.

Alternative network provider Zzoomm, which is rolling out their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of England, appears to have finally launched their new IP-based digital “Voice” (phone) service for customers on their full fibre lines. But it doesn’t seem to be a fully integrated product.

Mobile operator Three UK has today suffered a third major network outage in the space of four days, which began at around 10:30am today and seems to have been largely resolved by 12:30pm. The latest outage attracted many more complaints than the previous event and also impacted customer services (probably due to being swamped by calls).

European benchmarking firm nPerf has just published the results from their annual 2024 crowdsourced study into UK fixed broadband ISP performance, which finds that subscribers of Virgin Media, Fibrus and Vodafone enjoyed the best internet connection performances over the past year.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 have today announced that they’ve become the second major UK telecoms provider, after BT (EE), to adopt Hiya’s AI-based technologies, which can analyse call behaviour in real-time and determine whether to flag an incoming call as ‘suspected spam’ or block fraud.

The Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart, has called on the Scottish Government (SG) to “rethink” the Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) after it was revealed that only around 3-4% of the c.80,000 homes and businesses eligible for support under this measure had taken it up.

Over a decade has now passed since the BBC released its iPlayer Downloads app for PC and Mac users in the UK to “make offline viewing more simple“, which is a useful tool for those who may not always be close to a working broadband connection (e.g. when travelling). But sadly, the desktop download app will soon be no more.

Several years have now passed since UK ISP WeFibre (Telcom Group) announced its plan to “aggressively” deploy a gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network across rural parts of Northumberland, Cumbria, North West England, and Central and North Wales (here). But some projects in Wales have now been told that the work will not proceed.

Some of Three UK’s mobile customers are reporting a large network outage, which appears to be hitting sporadically across various different parts of the country. The issue is also known to be impacting users of the company’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partners, such as Smarty etc.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has this morning announced that they’ve opened a new investigation into broadband ISP Virgin Media’s migration of customers from analogue to IP-based digital landlines. The case will look at whether they’ve been treating vulnerable consumers correctly and “ensuring uninterrupted access” to emergency services.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media (VMO2) has reiterated to ISPreview that it currently has “no plans” to make its relatively new Stream TV service available to consumers on other internet providers, which is despite Sky opting to make their equivalent Sky Stream product available to users on other ISPs since launch.

Internet connection testing firm Ookla, which collects its data via the popular Speedtest.net service, recently published their latest Q3-Q4 2023 (H2) study into the performance of 5G based mobile broadband networks in the United Kingdom and found that Three UK continues to deliver the fastest speeds. But performance has declined.
