Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has today moved out of the pilot phase for its new 4G and 5G capable Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) technology and begun their “volume deployment“, which aims to reach 2,500 sites across mostly rural parts of Wales and the South-West of England by 2027.

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband and mobile network performance testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that 5G based mobile broadband download speeds have fallen across most regions of the UK over the past year. But despite this, overall data speeds (4G + 5G) have increased.

Mobile operator Talkmobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on parent Vodafone’s national UK 4G and 5G network, has finally launched their first plan offering “unlimited data” and at launch it’ll set you back just £16 per month (similar to SMARTY’s plan on Three UK’s network).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that their 1.8Gbps capable UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers a total of 949,000 properties in Scotland (up from 800,000 in mid-March 2023), which is estimated to have cost them around £280m (assumes an average of £300 per premises passed).

Broadband internet service providers (ISP) are being encouraged to patch or mitigate a “grave flaw” in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which could allow a remote attacker to craft a BGP UPDATE message that can de-peer (reset) BGP sessions and disrupt the global flow of internet traffic or cause a Denial of Service (DoS).

Network operator CityFibre has today announced that their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 3 million UK premises (up from 2.5m in January 2023) and 2.6 million of those are considered to be ‘Ready For Service’ (up from 2.2m), which means that residents can place an order with one of around 35-40 ISPs.
