In recent weeks the news has been full of reports (e.g. here and here), which frequently warn – without challenge – that the move by Mobile Network Operators (MNO) O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE to withdraw old 3G services will push “millions of people” into “digital poverty” and disconnect them from the internet. But are they correct?

Openreach has announced that they will finally introduce their new ‘Advanced Managed Install’ option for standalone UK broadband products (i.e. SOGEA – FTTC and SOGfast – G.fast) on 1st July 2023, which will give UK ISPs another option that can be offered to those with more complex installation requirements.

A new alternative network builder called NIO Net LTD (NIO Group) has revealed that they intend to build and operate both a Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network, which they’ll then wholesale out so that retail broadband ISPs can sell related packages on to homes and businesses.

A small alternative network provider called Smartfibre, which until now has managed to slip under our radar, has revealed that they’re tentatively planning to expand the reach of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to homes and businesses across more of the UK.

Cuckoo (Giganet) has quietly become one of the first Openreach based UK broadband ISPs to withdraw their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based products from sale for new customers (existing users remain supported), which leaves them only able to offer Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plans to over 10 million premises.

New data from mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has revealed that 53.3% of UK Smartphone users achieve average mobile broadband download speeds below 30Mbps (sub-“superfast” level), while 14% suffer sub-10Mbps downloads and 4.7% of users spend over 5% of their time with no mobile signal at all.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to stop publishing its annual summary of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds after the next report is released later this year (due Q4 2023). Mainly because they deem that it’s no longer needed as the market has changed.

Broadband ISP Fibrus has today announced that the first homes to be reached via their £108m Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract in Cumbria (here) have just been connected, which occurs only six months after the formal announcement. A total of 60,000 hard-to-reach premises are expected to benefit by completion.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today updated their Network and Information Systems (NIS) guidance by lowering their thresholds, which will require UK Operators of Essential Services (OES) – such as top-level domain name registries, DNS providers and internet exchanges (IXP) – to inform them of less severe outages.
