Consumer website Expert Reviews has published the winners of their annual “Best Broadband Awards 2023” event, which has surveyed UK consumers in an effort to identify the best Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of categories. Much like last year, the overall winner was named as Plusnet, again.

Broadband ISP Brsk, which has so far built a full fibre network to cover 100,000 UK premises (up from 70,000 in Sept 2022), has today confirmed that they won’t be increasing contract prices for the remainder of 2023. Furthermore, all current in-contract customers won’t have a price increase across their 24-month contracts.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today provisionally approved the merger of two major global satellite communication and broadband operators – Viasat (USA) and Inmarsat (UK), which they previously warned could have resulted in airlines facing “higher prices for on-board wifi” due to the loss of a key competitor.

CityFibre has announced that they’ve started the construction phase of their £17 million project to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover “almost every home and business” in the Leicestershire (England) market town of Loughborough.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), which forms part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), has today secured £6 million of funding to help with the research and development of future communication systems including 6G (mobile broadband), faster internet access and cloud computing etc.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today begun their annual hunt for the best ISPs and internet companies ahead of their forthcoming 2023 awards event, which has this year introduced several new categories (total of 16) to help mark their 25th year anniversary.

Cumbria-based network builder and broadband ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has today announced that they’ve secured an additional £130 million of funding to help “accelerate” their ongoing rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the United Kingdom.

Broadband provider Giganet (Cuckoo) has today announced that they’ve launched a new full fibre (FTTP and Ethernet) package for SOHO (small office, home office) customers in the small business sector, which they said is “ideal for offices of 1-10 employees” and will be offered via both their Openreach and CityFibre networks.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today become the latest national provider to adopt a new system from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which makes it easier for those on state benefits to be approved to take their cheaper “Essential Broadband” social tariff.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that their ongoing broadband ISP pilot of faster Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) download speeds – 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream) – has been extended to run for several more months and is also being expanded into more exchanges.

Hammersmith-based F&W Networks, which aims to cover 1 million UK premises with their new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network by 2025, has now expanded their coverage to 250,000 premises (up from 185k in October 2022) and they’ve also added another ISP in the shape of Octaplus (Octaplus Supercharged).

The boss of German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom (DT), Tim Höttges, has said that taking out a £5.6bn stake in UK broadband and telecoms giant BT Group in 2015 has turned out to be the “biggest mistake” he ever made, after its value fell by almost £4bn. But DT hasn’t given up on the possibility of doing a deal for BT.

Bath-based alternative network ISP Truespeed appears to have added the rural Somerset (England) village and civil parish of Bleadon, which is home to around 1,100 people, to their rollout plan for a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT and consultancy firm Hatch have today published their annual economic impact report for 2021/22, which among other things found that the operator provided an estimated boost of £24bn (Gross Value Added) to the UK economy last year and supported a total of 284,00 jobs.

The Building Digital UK team has today published their latest quarterly Winter 2023 update on the Government’s £5bn rural Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which has so far awarded six contracts – worth £164.8m – and launched 14 further procurements with a combined estimated value of £906.7m.
