The UK Supreme Court has today handed down three judgements related to the contentious issue of land ownership and rent reductions on mobile masts, such as those that may occur when mobile and fixed wireless broadband operators (EE, Three UK, O2 and Vodafone etc.) attempt to upgrade an existing site.

Network builder Netomnia, which is being supported by broadband ISP partner YouFibre, has today added 11,000 premises in the Gloucestershire town of Tewkesbury to the rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network. Meanwhile, YouFibre has just gone live in Barry, South Wales.

Hampshire-based home and business broadband ISP Onestream has announced that it plans to create up to 80 new jobs over the next year, which comes after its recent move into larger (6,000 sq ft) premises in Whiteley (Solent Way) – double the size of their previous base at Parkway (Solent Business Park).

Mobile operator giffgaff has today followed Tesco Mobile’s recent, if controversial, decision (here) to end free EU roaming for UK customers by announcing a huge 75% reduction in inclusive data roaming (mobile broadband) from 20 GigaBytes (GB) to just 5GB, as well as rates of 10p per MegaByte (MB) beyond that.

Ofcom has today proposed to make more spectrum available for satellite operators via the 14.25 – 14.5GHz “Ku band“, which they say would effectively “double the capacity available” and support “better broadband for more rural homes“, as well as connecting planes and ships. Separately, Starlink plan to add more UK earth stations.

Communications and energy provider Telecom Plus, which trade as UW (Utility Warehouse), has published their annual report and revealed that they ended the year with a UK customer base of 728,680 (up from 657,411 last year), with 323,623 taking their broadband services (down from 324,499) and 324,773 taking mobile (up from 302,654).

A new Censuswide survey of 2,001 UK people (aged 16+) that have broadband, which was commissioned by UK ISP Zen Internet, has found 99% of respondents were unaware of all the factors that could be slowing down their WiFi and 76% didn’t know their neighbour’s broadband router may be hindering their own connection.

A new survey of UK businesses, which was commissioned by UK5G – the national innovation network dedicated to accelerating the adoption of 5G in the UK, has claimed that the vast majority of UK businesses (70%) are already using or planning to deploy 5G services and networks. But cost is still a key barrier to adoption.

Customers of mobile operator Tesco Mobile have been left shocked and disappointed after the operator quietly updated their Terms & Conditions on 16th June 2022, which means that new or upgrading subscribers will no longer be able to benefit from free EU roaming – effective from 1st January 2023.

Exeter-based broadband ISP Jurassic Fibre has today announced that they’ve raised the coverage target for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network rollout in South West England, which will now aim to cover 500,000 premises across the region (including 30 towns and villages) by the end of 2026 2025.

Customers of fixed broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) reacted angrily over the weekend after several newspaper reports (e.g. Mirror) criticised the provider for its so-called “doorbell tax“, which hits you with a £25 one-off charge if their engineers show up for a scheduled appointment and nobody answers the door.

The Colchester Borough Council‘s recent multi-million pound project to build a new Dark Fibre network across the Essex town (here) appears to have also been one of the first places in the UK to deploy the Prysmian Group’s latest Sirocco HD cable, which can fit 552 fibres into a diameter of just 8.2mm.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today reduced the standard monthly pricing on several of their Openreach based and higher speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband packages for families. Some packages, such as their top 1000Mbps (gigabit) tier, have seen prices fall by up to £10 per month.

Openreach has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they recognise the plight of the less than 50,000 premises that are still stuck on older ECI based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband lines, which limits such homes to a top download speed of 330Mbps. But there’s still no certainty about when this will be resolved.
