Customers of UK ISP Giganet in Hampshire, particularly those connecting through their Point of Presence (PoP) in the Winchester Exchange, are among those suffering from a major outage after “significant damage” was caused to one of Openreach’s main fibre spine cables by a “large excavation team” in Basingstoke.

Network builder Netomnia, which is being supported by UK broadband ISP partner YouFibre, has today confirmed that their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network is being extended to cover homes and businesses in the three towns and villages of Oldham, Dalton in Furness and Doddington.

Ofcom has today introduced new rules to protect public UK phone boxes (payphones) – specifically those built by BT and KCOM – when they exist in areas with “poor mobile signals or high accident rates“. In addition, payphones will now require battery backup so that they can keep working after going digital (all-IP).

A complaint raised by broadband ISP and mobile giant BT looks set to result in the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a TV and poster advert for Sky Mobile (Sky Broadband), which was found to have “misleadingly” claimed to have offered “the perfect network“.

A team of network researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan has done it again after they achieved the “world’s first” successful data transmission of 1.02 Petabits per second (Pbs) in a standard cladding diameter (0.125 mm) multi-core fibre cable over a distance of 51.7km.
