Some consumers may be disappointed to learn that UK home broadband ISP Plusnet remains the only one of the major internet providers to have NOT joined Ofcom’s automatic compensation system, which is despite originally pledging to do so. The system first went live three long years ago. But this is, finally, about to change.

A few years ago we got the chance to test the performance of in-flight internet access on a long-haul British Airways flight from the UK to USA (here) – mostly conducted over water. We’ve now been able to run a similar test by going in the other direction, from the UK to Dubai (UAE), which mostly occurred over land.

Rochdale-based broadband ISP Zen Internet seems to have quietly removed any mention of the headline grabbing ‘Lifetime Price Guarantee‘ pledge (i.e. no price rises for as long as a contracted customer stays with them) from their product pages, which appears to have occurred at some point during March 2022.

City-focused gigabit broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which is currently embarking on a new plan to cover 2 million UK homes by the end of 2023 (they’ve already covered 825,000 premises), has today announced that they’ll invest a further £200m to help cover 400,000 additional premises during 2022.

Avanti, which is based in the UK and runs the HYLAS network of five large Ka-band communication satellites in high earth orbit (35,792km) for rural broadband and backhaul delivery across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has been given a reprieve by a new investment deal that slashes its debt from $810m to $260m (£198m).

The Rotherham Council in South Yorkshire (England) has scrapped its original 2018 plan to deploy a free public WiFi (wireless broadband) network to serve the town centre area, which occurred after the chosen supplier went through some unspecified changes and showed a “general lack of engagement” in progressing the contract.

Openreach (BT) has today also released the Tranche 8 batch of 46 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

Openreach (BT) has today added another 36 new locations (towns and villages) to their £15bn rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The operator has also confirmed that their full fibre network has now covered 7 million UK premises.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published an interesting new map of 4G mobile (mobile broadband) network coverage from along Scotland’s most well-known road trip, the North Coast 500. The map is intended to help holidaymakers plan around parts of the 516-mile route where the signal is poor or non-existent.

The Scottish Government have complained that the UK government are yet to provide any “sense” of the delivery timescale, or how much funding will be allocated to it, from the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout. The SG also claims that the project may only target the “cheapest and easiest to reach premises“, at the expense of rural areas.

Consumer site Expert Reviews has posted the winners of their annual ‘Best Broadband Awards 2022‘ event, which surveyed consumers in an effort to identify the top UK Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of different categories. The overall winner this year was Plusnet.

Openreach has today announced that they will soon pilot a new “Advanced Install” service for those taking one of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP products, which is designed to address situations where an installation might be more complex than usual (e.g. business and public sector users).
