Rural UK ISP Wessex Internet has this week connected the first home in South Somerset to their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which has been deployed as part of their state aid supported contract via the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has been fined £150k by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, after they were found to have provided “inaccurate and incomplete information” during an earlier investigation into the company’s billing issues (here), which separately resulted in the operator being fined £10.5m for overcharging customers.

The Scottish Government has announced that their Interim Broadband Voucher Scheme, which forms part of the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project and is designed to help rural premises in the hardest to reach areas get a faster connection installed, has been extended to 31st March 2022 (it was previously due to finish this month).

A new report has used data from 276,083 consumer speedtests to reveal the top 10 fastest and slowest streets for broadband ISP download speed in the UK. The slowest street was found to be Wistaston Road (Crewe) in Cheshire on just 0.24Mbps, while the fastest was Haul Fryn (Birchgrove) in Swansea on 882Mbps.

Openreach has apologised after its engineers, which were busy deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Southampton (Hampshire, England), accidentally erected two telegraph poles in the wrong location at Seacombe Green, much to the annoyance of local residents. But they’ll soon be moved.

UK ISP YouFibre has announced that the first customers can now connect to their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the port and market town of Kings Lynn (Norfolk), which is being built by network partner Netomnia.

Customers of mobile operator O2 UK (VMO2) appear to be suffering from a major problem or outage of the provider’s billing system, which for the past couple of days has been preventing them from being able to view their bills, make payments, add a data bolt-on or change their tariff.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today announced that up to 250,000 of their Pay Monthly customers will, from tomorrow (2nd December 2021), be able to claim the gift of free unlimited data (mobile broadband) and this will then last for the entire Christmas period (30 days).

Neos Networks has today announced that they’ve completed the latest key phase of their UK network investment programme, Project Edge, which means that they’ve now unbundled a total of 550 BT exchanges and will reach a “full fibre” footprint of more than 34,000km before the end of the year. Next stop.. 700 exchanges.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today given itself a pat on the back after its research found that 1.3 million broadband ISP customers had secured better deals as a result of their new End-of-Contract Notification (ECN) system. Overpayments by mobile customers also dropped by £100m due to new rules on handset bundles.

The £165m state aid supported Project Stratum rollout in Northern Ireland, which is working with UK ISP Fibrus to spread a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to a further 76,233 premises in disadvantaged rural areas by March 2024 (84,500 if you include the expansion), has just completed 15,000 premises.

The incumbent broadband operator for the city of Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, looks set to get some real competition after UK alternative network ISP Grain bravely announced that they would be deploying their gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network into the same location. But other operators have similar plans.

A new survey from UK ISP Voneus, which is based off data gathered from 3,000 people who purchased a broadband plan (from any ISP) within the last 12-months, has found that 43% could not identify their package’s upload speed. Uploads were also found to be one-third as important as download speeds when selecting a plan.

CityFibre aim to boost their £60m rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool by joining the Cooperative Network Infrastructure (CNI) scheme, which enables commercial re-use of existing local authority owned cable ducts and fibre.
