Just a note to say that we’ve made a few small changes to our Broadband ISP Listings (Comparison) page. The individual detail pages for each ISP now display whether a provider offers ‘UK Support‘ (Yes, No, Partial or Unknown [?]). We’ve also marked ISPs that support Ofcom’s 2018 Speed Code (where relevant) and the Automatic Compensation scheme.

The CEO of alternative full fibre broadband ISP B4RN, Michael Lee, has revealed that the UK Government (DCMS / Building Digital UK) are proposing “Voucher Priority Areas” as a semi-solution to the disruption caused by their new £5bn Project Gigabit programme in rural parts of Cumbria and Northumberland.

A few months ago BT finally launched a new set-top-box for their broadband-based Pay TV (IPTV) service – TV Box Pro (here), but in an unusual move they opted to leave the new WiFi (wireless networking) functionality disabled. The good news is that this is now being enabled for customers.

A team of Japanese scientists working at Keio University have managed to develop a solution for “error-free” plastic (polymer) optical fibre cables, which can solve some of the cost, delay and heat generation problems that have tended to restrict their use. Data speeds of 53Gbps (Gigabits per second) were achieved.

Low cost UK internet and phone provider TalkTalk has this week become a company with “significant control” over alternative network operator Freedom Fibre (FF), which is currently building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to homes in semi-rural parts of Cheshire and Lancashire (England).

UK ISP YouFibre has announced that the first customers are now live on their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the Lincolnshire (England) market town of Spalding, which is being built with support from network partner Netomnia and their contractors.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has today issued a new post-summer progress update on ISP Airband‘s ongoing rollout of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband (100Mbps+) network in the two counties, which ultimately aims to reach an extra 40,150 premises.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which aims to build their gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 UK properties by 2023, has published their annual accounts to 31st December 2020 and revealed that their network passes 175,000 properties (up 46K since 2019), as well as 36,000 customers (up 49%).

Wireless and full fibre UK ISP Voneus, which is backed by Macquarie Capital, has continued to expand its operations in South Wales by acquiring IRG Computers, which is the company behind ResQNet – a wireless internet provider that serves rural areas across parts of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and the Swansea Valleys.

Business focused UK ISP Connectus has announced that their gigabit-capable broadband and Ethernet network has now been deployment to serve up to 50 businesses on the Bolesworth Estate in Cheshire, which specifically reflects the rural Chowley Oak Business Park within that estate.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has recently extended its Mobile Boost Scheme, which aims to improve 4G mobile (mobile broadband and voice) coverage in rural parts of the two counties by offering vouchers worth up to £1,200 toward the cost of an indoor mobile signal booster from a registered supplier.

The Connected Britain Awards 2021 (Total Telecom) event last night revealed the winners of this year’s competition, which for example saw broadband ISP Hyperoptic pick up the win for the “Broadband Provider of the Year” category and CityFibre take home the “Project Rollout Award“.

UK ISP Wessex Internet, which is currently building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to rural homes and businesses in Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire and Wiltshire (Southern England), has announced that they intend to create another 100 jobs in the region to help boost their rollout.

Openreach (BT) has now recovered after last week suffering from a serious “intermittent system failure” that impacted several of their systems, which just so happened to be “critical” for processing Ethernet / Dark Fibre provision orders and Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) requests by AltNet broadband ISPs.

A large number of NETGEARs broadband and WiFi routers have been left vulnerable to a new Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit, which works by allowing a hacker to manipulate the update process for each device’s Circle Smart Parental Control Service in order to gain control of the router.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has had one of its press adverts banned by the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after rival EE (BT) complained that it misleadingly made a claim of being “Britain’s Best for Coverage,” which was based on flaky feedback from a consumer survey, rather than objective technical evidence.
