The BT Group has today reported their latest Q1 2021/22 results, which among other things reports that Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 5.16 million UK premises (up from 4.6m last quarter) and 860,000 of BT’s retail ISP customers have taken the service.

The latest combined Q2 2021 results from broadband ISP, TV and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 has, among other things, revealed that they plan to completely upgrade their existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFX) network – some 14.3 million premises – with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tech by the end of 2028.

A new cross-party “super committee” has today begun to scrutinise the UK Government’s new Online Safety Bill (Online Harms), which aims to have Ofcom clampdown on “harmful” online content (e.g. hate speech, bullying, terrorism, conspiracy theories etc.), while precariously trying to balance that with freedom of speech.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a deeper Phase 2 investigation to examine any “competition concerns” that may surround the £8.6bn (€10 billion) sale of CK Hutchison Holdings (Three UK) interests in European tower assets and businesses to Spanish company Cellnex.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents alternative broadband networks (AltNet), has seen its UK membership balloon skywards after gaining 32 members in 2021 so far. The growth reflects a surge in new AltNets, many of which are building their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure.

A complaint by rival mobile operator EE (BT) has prompted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban several of Vodafone’s adverts after they “misleadingly” claimed to be the “UK’s Best Network” or “UK’s best mobile data network” for 4G and 5G services (mobile broadband).

The annual Digging Up Britain 2021 report from LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig), which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has reported that there was a 24% increase in the amount of digging work performed by the telecoms industry over the last 12-months.

Belfast-based ISP Fibrus, which has spent the past couple of years deploying a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland, has today announced that their build is being extended to include 300,000 premises in the North of England (i.e. Cumbria, Northumberland and North Yorkshire).

A new Opinium survey of 4,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that 14.85 million people have been hit by a “major broadband outage” in the last year – this is said to be three times the number of the previous year’s survey (4.7 million).
