Customers of both EE’s and BT’s mobile UK service will be able to enjoy it a bit more on Sunday this weekend after the operators announced that they were zero-rating data (mobile broadband) across their network this Sunday. The move is intended to celebrate the Women’s England vs. Germany UEFA European Championship final.
EE and BT Mobile customers, including EE’s SME (business) customers, will thus all enjoy free data from 12 noon to midnight on Sunday 31st July. The change will apply even if you’ve already used up your current data allowance. Naturally, if you already have a plan with “unlimited data“, then there will be no change.
Marc Allera, CEO of EE, said: “We know emotions will be running high and the last thing anyone wants to worry over is their data running out. So, on Sunday evening, customers will be able count on our award-winning network to stream every kick, capture every moment and share every roar when, fingers crossed, the Lionesses bring it home!“

So some backend system needs updating that day?
I wonder if they are worried about capacity and routers getting overloaded on Sunday should a lot of people stream the match, so they lighten the load on the routers by turning off data capturing for data usage?
Phil – this is not the case. BT Technology/Networks regularly provide data usage graphs when special events happen. The most recent graph published on network usage was to show how data spiked when the PM announce he was leaving.
There is a difference however to recording individual customer usage compared to capturing the total data running through their network.
No company gives something away without good reason, they aren’t a charity. At the very least they are doing it only as a PR stunt, but could also have other reasons why it is easier for them to stop recording customer traffic that day.
BT are just manufacturing positive news stories whilst the strike is on to try and paint the company in a better light.
This.
More like distract from strikes
Does 1p Mobile get free data on Sunday as they are with EE network?
No only direct EE,BT customers
That’s not fair. Discrimination against smaller providers who are with ee eg 1p mobile, Plusnet and few others.
Hardly…. I suppose O2, Three and Vodafone are also discriminating their customers
