Rural UK ISP Wessex Internet has today announced that they intend to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network to cover homes and businesses in the North Dorset market towns of Blandford Forum and Sturminster Newton.

Ofcom has today launched a second consultation on the future use of UK telephone numbers, which among other things proposes to remove the obligation on phone operators to provide a “local dialling” facility (this requirement is less relevant on modern internet based networks) and to prohibit “cash for calls” schemes.

City-focused UK ISP Hyperoptic, which is currently deploying 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks across large residential buildings (MDUs), office blocks and houses, has reached a new social housing agreement with Hackney Council in London that will see their network cover 30% of homes in the borough.

The combination of good weather and the further easing of COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions has, according to UK ISP TalkTalk, seen weekly broadband traffic on their network fall by 13% since the latest relaxation of rules started on 12th April 2021. In short, we’re all spending more time outside.

Broadband ISP and Pay TV provider Virgin Media UK has today announced that a further 13,300 homes in parts of Northern Ireland, specifically Newry, Markethill, Camlough and Bessbrook, have just benefitted from the ongoing expansion of their gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

ISP Talk Straight has teamed up with ADTRAN to deploy a new 60GHz based gigabit fixed wireless broadband network across rural parts of the UK. The decision follows a recent Proof of Concept (PoC) trial, which found that the MetNet 60G solution could be a quick and cost-effective way of extending coverage beyond full fibre.

Mobile operator iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone), which recently extended their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Three UK (here), has now begun to make ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity available to their SIM Only customers at no extra cost. But initially only a very few Smartphones are supported.

A new Opinium survey of 2,001 UK adults, which was conducted in mid-March 2021 and commissioned by Uswitch, has revealed that 26% of people with a landline don’t even have a phone attached to it and 35% of respondents said they only have a landline because it’s needed for their broadband connection.

UK ISP BT has today announced that customers of their home broadband packages can now add ‘Xbox Game Pass Ultimate‘ to their account “contract free,” although you will of course still have to pay the extra £10 per month charge for this and that’s slightly cheaper than the official price of £10.99 per month from Microsoft.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today announced that their new CityFibre and Openreach based ‘Future Fibre‘ packages, which offer average top speeds of up to 506Mbps via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, have now become available to homes in the Suffolk (England) town of Ipswich.

Cable broadband and TV provider Virgin Media UK has revealed plans to launch a new Entertainment Service, which will apparently bring lots of different streaming services “together into one place.” Oddly, the trial for this is currently only open to those with a broadband-only service (no TV or phone) on their network and a HUB 3 or 4 router.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has so far built a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 155,000 premises in England, appears to have launched a new 400Mbps package to replace their old 300Mbps one and has also removed their slowest 30Mbps package. At the same time a new Spring Sale has begun.

A new survey of 2,026 UK adults, which was conducted by Censuswide for UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, has found that 75% of respondents would not buy a home if they knew the local internet connectivity was poor. The survey added that people would be willing to pay £1,514 extra for a house that has FTTP broadband.
