The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (Jan 2021) from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that only one telecoms operator has made it into the latest list – Tesco Mobile, albeit with an improved score and ranking.

The UK Government has launched a consultation on a series of proposed changes to the Electronic Communications Code (ECC), which aims to put right some of the problems caused by their last revision in 2017 and could thus make it quicker for broadband and 4G or 5G mobile operators to deploy their networks.

Worcestershire-based rural broadband ISP Airband, which aspires to deploy their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises by the end of 2025 (here), has signed a new long-term partnership with civil engineering firm Light Source to help support the build. Starting in Shropshire.

A total of c.5,000 additional homes in the Debdale area of Greater Manchester have just become the latest to benefit from the on-going expansion of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (Liberty Global) new gigabit-capable and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network.

Openreach (BT) has told ISPs of another 51 UK exchange locations where they intend to move away from their old copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will apply in areas that receive over 75% coverage via their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

A new survey from the Citizens Advice agency has claimed that more than 1 in 6 UK adults are “struggling to afford their broadband during the third lockdown.” As a result the charity wants cheaper ISP packages to be made available for those on low-income benefits or other vulnerable groups.

The latest crop of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Starlink broadband satellites include the long-awaited “laser links between the satellites” feature, which could boost the constellation’s coverage and reliability. On top of that the company has hinted that staggering speeds of 10Gbps may in the future be possible for individual users.

Customers of UK ISP Origin Broadband have been notified of a forthcoming price hike to their broadband and phone services, which is due to be introduced from 1st March 2021 and will see prices increase by 4.2%. The change is calculated using November’s CPI rate of inflation (0.3%) + 3.9%.

The £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) industry project made progress today after mobile operators O2, Three UK and Vodafone reached a related agreement to both build and share 222 new 4G mobile masts, which will be used to boost mobile voice and mobile broadband coverage in rural parts of the country.

A new survey of 20,376 UK people, specifically those who are responsible for either a broadband or mobile service, has found that 33% of customers whose ISP deal ended in the last year (7% on mobile) have never received an End-of-Contract Notification – via letter, text or email – and may thus be overpaying for their package.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has announced that they will aim to hire a further 428 UK apprentices (229) and graduates (199) this year – part of their September 2021 intake plan. But the figure is down from the 700+ promised via last year’s September 2020 intake plan and comes at a time of job losses elsewhere.

A little known ISP called Haven Wireless, which helped to connect rural homes in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire (Wales) by harnessing a mobile broadband connection from EE (BT) and other operators, is set to close on 31st March 2021 after running into “acute capacity issues on the frequencies used by the 4G masts covering our area.”

Mobile network operator Three UK has today announced that they intend to combine both their two Thames Valley offices into a single central one for the first time, which is to be based in Reading. The new 117,000 square foot building is currently still under construction at the Green Park business centre.

A new Assembly Research study of several countries, which was commissioned by Liberty Global (Virgin Media) and Telefonica (O2), has found that 60% of broadband customers benefit from faster speeds, higher quality connectivity and a greater range of products in markets where fixed and mobile networks have converged.
