iD Mobile UK Signs New Agreement to Launch 5G Mobile Plans

Mobile operator iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone) has extended their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with supplier Three UK and as part of that they will also gain access to the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity, as well as continued 4G provision.

The operator, which is now home to over 1 million customers, states that the extension of their long-running partnership – active since 2015 – will also enable them to offer “even better value across their monthly and pay as you go range,” such as via “bigger data plans at some of the most competitive prices on the market.”

On top of that there’s a vague mention toward “delivering new and innovative features” in the future and iD Mobile reiterates Three UK’s claim of offering the “UK’s fastest 5G network,” which is based purely on the fact that they have the most spectrum frequency for it (140MHz), but this overlooks some caveats (e.g. the need to ensure a good backhaul capacity for cell sites and strong coverage).

Otherwise, work on bringing 5G to iD Mobile is already said to be “underway“, with the new standard expected to land on the network at some point during the first half of 2021.

Adam Dunlop, MD of iD Mobile, said:

“Since launching in 2015, we’ve remained committed to making our customers’ mobile lives better and looking at ways to improve the experience for them. Three UK has been a fantastic partner in helping us make that a realisation, and our new commercial agreement and contract extension allows us to super-charge that approach. Our ambition is to be the best network for data in terms of value and flexibility and a key part of that will be the roll-out of 5G. With Three being at the forefront of the 5G revolution, it makes them the ideal network partner for us and allows us to continue with our ambitious plans for growing iD Mobile even further.”

End.

iD mobile have such a bad reputation on Trustpilot but my partner was with them for 18 months on a sim only and they were no bother at all. Never once did we have an issue with the signal or billing and they’re an ideal route to contract phones for those with bad credit too because after 6 months they allow you to upgrade to a contract phone if you keep your SIM payment going without any issues / late payment or bounced direct debits during the first six months

My experience was, unfortunately, much worse. I bought a 30-day unlimited sim to use when visiting family and travelling abroad.

I rung and cancelled immediately after the sim was activated to avoid the recurring bill, and notified them the date on which I would like to leave iD. The rep said this would be okay, and I won’t get charged extra.

I really should’ve never gone with them – roaming hotspots didn’t work, which was my primary use for the sim (so I didn’t have to use my normal sim’s data). Also, my family live in a 3 blackspot so the sim was useless there too!

Then, despite cancelling immediately, they charged me for the next month. I spent ~6 hours on the phone (getting cut off or hung up on frequently) trying to get them to refund me and cancel my account. Eventually, after lots of refusal and the implication that I couldn’t cancel as I’d taken out a 12 month contract (I had not).

I managed to get the sim cancelled, but only a partial refund. This was two years ago, but still, I often hear bad things.
