Cityfibre, which is rolling out a Dark Fibre and FTTP broadband ISP network across urban parts of the UK, has announced a new deal with Calix to deploy the “world’s only” Software Defined Access (SDA) operating system across its network. They claim it could help deliver 10Gbps to “every home,” maybe even 100Gbps.

Sparse rural communities and new build housing developments are two of the areas that councillors in Derbyshire are now recognising as problems for their on-going Digital Derbyshire (DD) project, which currently aims to ensure that 98% of local premises can access “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) by the end of 2018.

RootMetrics and IHS Markit have today published the results of a new H1 2018 study into 4G and 3G mobile network operator performance across 16 of the United Kingdom’s “most populated metropolitan markets” (cities), which found that Belfast was the best and London the worst.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has conducted an interesting study, which examines the performance differences of major UK broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media and Vodafone) when being tasked with downloading PC games from Valve’s popular Steam digital distribution platform.

Cable operator Virgin Media has complemented the expansion of their UK ultrafast broadband ISP and TV network in Scotland today by signing a new 4 year strategic partnership with STV, which among other things will enable them to broadcast STV in HD in all cabled STV regions (Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee) on EPG slot 103.

Customers of the Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet may like to know that a small but useful change will soon make the provider’s Caller ID feature, which is currently a chargeable add-on service that shows the incoming number on a digital handset, completely free to use. But all phone providers will have to do the same.

The new ‘Custom Plan’ essentially gives everybody unlimited calls and minutes but allows you to choose the repayment term, upfront payment and included data allowance (all this affects your monthly charge).
