A new study of home broadband packages offered by some of the UK’s largest ISPs – including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, EE, Plusnet and Virgin Media – has claimed that subscribers can face “steep price rises” of up to 62.5% (an extra £152 annually) if they stay loyal to their provider and don’t switch away.

The UK Government has today opened the final (Wave 3) round of bidding for £95 million in funding to local authorities as part of their £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund, which aims to stimulate commercial investment in “gigabit capable” broadband networks (rural and urban).

The Suffolk County Council in England has officially confirmed that their £64m state aid supported Better Broadband for Suffolk (BBS) project with Openreach (BT) will achieve 98% coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable (FTTC/P) networks by the end of 2020 as hoped (up from over 93% today).

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has announced that 26,000 premises in Burton-on-Trent (East Staffordshire), Dronfield (Derbyshire), Thurmaston (Leicestershire) will be the next to get access to their “gigabit-ready” ultrafast broadband ISP and TV network (we still don’t know when those Gigabit speed will actually arrive).

Great Britain might take a drubbing for its lack of ultrafast pure fibre optic (FTTH/P) broadband ISP infrastructure but a new study by Qrator Labs suggests that at least our underlying internet links appear to be fairly resilient to faults, with England, Scotland and Wales collectively ranking 2nd best in the world.

Residents in the rural Somerset (England) communities of Sandford and Churchill will soon access ultrafast broadband speeds after UK ISP Truespeed Communications completed the build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which was needed in order to connect the local Thatchers Cider business.

Consumers adopting one of Openreach’s 80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based UK broadband ISP lines (usually advertised with average speeds of c.60-65Mbps) are likely to create fewer fault reports during the initial provision phase after the new “low level error correction” feature began being applied to them.

BT has this month extended the roll-out of their new InLinkUK smart kiosks to Sheffield, Newcastle and Gateshead. The kiosks claim to offer “ultrafast” 1Gbps capable free public WiFi, free UK phone calls, USB device charging and a range of other digital services to help people in the vicinity.

The UK Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA) has warned that today’s proposal by the leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, to impose a new ‘Digital Licence Fee’ upon tech giants and ISPs “runs the risk of undermining broadband investment and could lead to increased prices for all consumers.”

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that they’ve settled their legal challenge against Durham County Council (England), which began after the operator objected to the “hefty” fees per metre that the authority wanted to charge for laying new fibre optic cable along grass verges.

The Conservative AM for Montgomeryshire in Wales, Russell George, has criticised the Welsh Government’s lack of explanation over the delay in awarding contracts for their new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) roll-out project, which aims to reach 88,000 extra premises in poorly served areas and could be worth up to £200m.

Israel-based chipset maker Sckipio has teamed up with Siklu to deploy a unique twist on hybrid fibre G.fast broadband technology, which is now able to get capacity from a millimeter Wave (mmWave) wireless link instead of a fibre optic cable. This is being used to deliver speeds of up to 800Mbps (aggregate) to flats.
