Mobile operator O2, which is working alongside key supplier Ericsson, has today announced that their new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network has just been expanded to cover several parts (usually the busiest areas at first) of Tyne & Wear, Surrey and Lincoln.

The large village of New Rossington just outside Doncaster (South Yorkshire), which is home to around 14,000 people, has just become the latest to benefit from Virgin Media’s expansion of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. Some 5,600 homes have been covered.

Full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic has, for the fourth year in a row, made it into the Sunday Times Tech Track 100 for 2020, which is a league table of Britain’s top 100 private technology companies with the fastest-growing sales over the latest 3 years. Sadly no other internet service providers made this year’s ranking.

A new study from umlaut (formerly P3), which examined the performance of 5G based mobile broadband networks across London, has found that Vodafone delivered the best overall performance across the capital city. The operator also hit the highest average download of 215.2Mbps, but they were beaten on uploads by EE.

In a small development Tesco Mobile today appears to have conducted a brand (logo) redesign, which they say will aim to revitalise the brand expression and to align more closely with the wider Tesco family. Otherwise there doesn’t appear to be anything dramatically new.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has today echoed existing calls for the UK Government to setup a new “Infrastructure Bank” to help deliver on their planned expansion of “gigabit-capable” and “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband networks, as well as to support roads, railways and housing.

SpaceX has revealed the results from their most recent “official” testing of the new future mega constellation of small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Starlink satellites, which they claim has now “shown super low latency” and download speeds “greater than 100Mbps” (Megabits per second).

Ofcom has published their latest Q1 2020 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while TalkTalk were the worst for landline phone and BT did the same for Pay TV. Meanwhile Vodafone, Three UK, BT and Virgin Media all tied the bottom spot for mobile.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK has just completed another large network extension in the West Midlands of England, which this time sees 10,000 homes in Brandhall (a suburb of Oldbury in the south of Sandwell) gaining access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service.

Mobile operator Three UK has extended their existing “full fibre” network capacity (backhaul) deal with Cityfibre via a new multi-million-pound contract, which will help to connect an additional 1,300 mobile masts across 59 towns and cities. This will support the operator’s new gigabit capable 5G based mobile broadband network.

Cityfibre, which is currently in the process of building a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to 8 million homes and businesses across 100+ cities and towns (c.30% of the UK), has recently added a fairly basic availability checker to their website.

Some of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s UK mobile customers are complaining after they were suddenly issued with a replacement SIM card that doesn’t work in their handsets, instead resulting in a “SIM not valid” message on the screen. The problem is mostly affecting those with older phones, many of which are elderly users.

A new project commissioned by the Digital Innovation Zone (DIZ) looks set to result in 83 GP surgeries across West Essex and East Hertfordshire in England being upgraded to support broadband or fibre optic Ethernet connections with speeds of up to 1Gbps (Gigabit per second).

A new Faversham-based ISP called Yesfibre, which was only incorporated on 27th April 2020, has this week cropped up with tentative plans to roll-out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to homes and businesses in “selected urban and suburban areas across the UK.”

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a new range of 5G ready business plans for small businesses, which among other things includes access to new entertainment services “as the traditional lines between work and play continue to blur“. Handset customers also gain additional protection for their device.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which is deploying a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to some of England’s remotest communities, are aiming to pick-up the build pace in 2020 after they reported a total network reach of 129,000 premises (up by 36,000 in the year) and 24,000 customers (up 26%).
