London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre has today announced that they’ve completed an 8-month deployment of their multi-Gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Sutton, which has covered all council-owned homes (social housing) across the borough.

Ofcom has today released their Summer 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 14% or 4.2 million premises (up from 12% in Jan 2020) and 2% (590,000 premises) are still unable to get speeds of 10Mbps+. Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (unchanged).

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is developing a new standard called G.fin, which could essentially create a novel fibre optic network inside your home in order to improve the speeds and connectivity directly to residential broadband routers and wireless (WiFi) access points etc.

The UK Government has proposed to mandate that broadband and phone providers, as well as related companies in the sector, should participate in their new “Smart Data” initiative, which aims to foster the “sharing [of] customer data” in order to deliver better product comparisons and billing management across accounts etc.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today published their latest UK Mobile Network Index, which among other things reveals that data traffic (mobile broadband) more than doubled to travel and holiday sites, while voice calls returned to near pre-lockdown levels (i.e. they’ve reduced) and 5G users watch more online video than 4G ones.

Full fibre ISP Jurassic Fibre, which aims to cover 350,000 UK premises with a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across South West England (here and here), looks set to imminently expand beyond their initial deployment area in Devon by reaching into Somerset and Dorset.

Securing legal access agreements (wayleaves) from UK landlords in order to install new gigabit-capable fixed broadband or 5G mobile infrastructure can be a slow and expensive process, but now a new automation technology has been developed that could handle tens of thousands more wayleaves per week.

UK ISP BT is sending out invites for a new trial, which will see them “teaming up” with EE to offer a special discount when a customer takes both a BT Broadband and EE Mobile service. Normally both providers, despite being part of the same group, would treat their customers as being separate but that may soon change.

UK ISP Quickline, which is part of Bigblu group, has today secured a new £9.11 million contract that will see them deploy “superfast” (30Mbps+) and “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) capable fixed wireless and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband services to 6,700 extra premises across rural West Yorkshire and York.

ISP Zen Internet has just become the United Kingdom’s second broadband provider, after iDNET in May 2020, to be certified as a “B Corporation.” This means they’ve met a number of social and environmental standards, which reflect their commitment to goals outside of shareholder profit.

Customers of BT and EE’s broadband, TV, phone and mobile services are starting to discover that the ISP has made a major tweak to their annual pricing policy, which means that new and re-contracting customers will now be hit by price increases that align to both the CPI rate of inflation “plus an additional 3.9%.”

UK ISP KCOM, which is currently investing £100m to extend the availability of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across “tens of thousands” of additional premises in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, has once again contracted Light Source to help deliver this expansion.

A new H1 2020 report from benchmarking firm RootMetrics has revealed how well each UK mobile operator (Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2) performs in terms of 5G based network availability and mobile broadband speeds across 16 cities. Overall EE offered the best availability, but in terms of performance it’s not so clear cut.

Fibre optic UK ISP Trooli (CallFlow) has announced that their on-going deployment of a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband network is set to expand outside of the Kent area and into East Sussex, with two of the first communities to benefit being Crowborough and Uckfield.

Mobile operator O2, which is working alongside key supplier Ericsson, has today announced that their new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network has just been expanded to cover several parts (usually the busiest areas at first) of Tyne & Wear, Surrey and Lincoln.

The large village of New Rossington just outside Doncaster (South Yorkshire), which is home to around 14,000 people, has just become the latest to benefit from Virgin Media’s expansion of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. Some 5,600 homes have been covered.

Full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic has, for the fourth year in a row, made it into the Sunday Times Tech Track 100 for 2020, which is a league table of Britain’s top 100 private technology companies with the fastest-growing sales over the latest 3 years. Sadly no other internet service providers made this year’s ranking.
