Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has today updated their early real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 12 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service), which reveals that the United Kingdom remains the slowest of the early adopter countries (599Mbps UK vs 1815Mbps USA).

After Three UK led the way, followed by Vodafone, then EE and today mobile operator O2 has become the last of the major UK providers to launch its own “Unlimited Data” (mobile broadband) tariffs for 4G and future 5G customers, which are available on both their Custom Plans and SIM-only contracts from £33 a month.

A new piece of research from Oxera, which was commissioned by the Broadband Stakeholder Group think-tank, has helped to highlight some of the benefits (better employment, increased economic activity etc.) that UK Local Authorities could expect if they help to rollout 5G mobile and “full fibre” broadband.

In yet another major upset the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has today taken the decision to end their contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear, which last year suffered significant delays that set some parts of their rollout back by around 2 years. Sadly efforts to agree a revised plan were not successful.

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has announced that the CEO of their sibling business connectivity focused ISP Entanet, Elsa Chen, has been appointed to the new role of Chief Customer Officer. Elsa will now be responsible for CF’s end-to-end customer experience strategy across all market verticals.

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has today published the results of their Global Mobile Experience Report, which ranks 167 countries by measuring the quality of their 3G and 4G based mobile networks (e.g. O2, Three UK, EE and Vodafone). Overall the United Kingdom placed just 36th.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear UK, which is working to rollout a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Berkshire, appears to have suffered another local setback after Network Rail refused permission to run optical cable over one of their bridges near Binfield.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their new 5G network, which is capable of ultrafast mobile broadband speeds, has just been deployed to cover the South Terminal building at Gatwick Airport. The North Terminal is set to follow by early 2020.

Openreach (BT) has today informed ISPs that they are holding off giving any further guidance on future build plans for their hybrid fibre G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) technology, which means that under the existing rollout they will only cover 2.73 million UK premises by March 2020..

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has reached a new access agreement (wayleave) with several housing associations in Scotland, which means that residents of social homes in two Scottish cities – Aberdeen and Stirling – may soon be able to access a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today announced that they intend to withdraw their old copper line ADSL and ADSL2+ based broadband packages from 31st December 2019. Existing customers will continue to be supported but their main focus will now be on fibre-based FTTC, FTTP / FTTH and GPON products.

The Kent County Council in England has confirmed that 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband from Openreach (BT) is set to reach an additional 5,000 rural premises. On top of that they’ve boosted the value of the UK Government’s rural Gigabit broadband vouchers from £1,500 to £2,500 per household.

Nintendo has won an injunction in the UK High Court that forces all of the largest broadband ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and EE – to block four websites that were found to have facilitated copyright infringement (internet piracy) by helping to distribute video games for the company’s Switch console.

Digital security specialist Trustwave has discovered five new “credential leaking” vulnerabilities in several broadband routers from Comba and D-Link. Unfortunately, not all of these vulnerabilities have been patched “despite multiple outreach attempts” by the company to manufacturers.

Openreach (BT) has announced that more than 45,000 premises in Salford (Greater Manchester) can now access their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which has been deployed as part of their work to cover 4 million premises by March 2021 and possibly 15 million by around 2025.
