The fallout from a 2015 cyberattack against TalkTalk’s UK website, which exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers to hackers, appears to be continuing after a new report alleges that the broadband ISP failed to correctly inform 4,545 customers that their data had been compromised (instead they were told it was NOT exposed).

The second stage of the annual Broadband Genie 2019 survey has today presented several awards to Zen Internet, the Post Office and Plusnet after they took the top spots across various different UK ISP performance categories. Overall budget ISP Plusnet took home the most wins, including for “Best Broadband Provider.“

The European Commission has recently confirmed the winners from their second call up of applications for the €120m WiFi4EU initiative, which includes 14 municipalities in the United Kingdom that should now receive vouchers worth up to €15K (£13.2K) to help them install FREE public WiFi wireless broadband hotspots by 2020.

Openreach (BT) has launched a new website this week, which cleans things up quite nicely and also introduces a new availability checker for fibre optic based broadband ISP services on their UK network (FTTC, G.fast and FTTP), which now includes a choice of providers and a pre-registration page for non-FTTP areas.

Plucky rural UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to remote premises in several counties across England, expects to achieve 6,000 live connections by the end of June and has raised £2m via crowdfunding.

The incumbent ISP for Hull and East Riding (East Yorkshire), KCOM, appears to have announced the “completion” of their £85m “Lightstream” roll-out, which means that nearly all of the 200,000+ premises within their network area should now be within reach of a 900Mbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service.

The UK High Court of Justice has ruled that Ofcom must pay back £220m to mobile operators as part of restitution for the regulator’s handling of a licence fee hike to the 900MHz and 1800MHz (3G and 4G) spectrum bands (i.e. £82.4m to EE, £54.4m for Vodafone, £54.4m for O2 and £26.9m for Three UK).

Some 5,300 additional homes and business in Cambridgeshire look set to benefit from Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP technology. The news follows a new deal between the council and Openreach (BT), which will help to achieve their ambition for 99% “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage by the end of 2020.

The next generation of multi-Gigabit speed capable 5G based mobile broadband networks could be facing yet another challenge due to a backlog of disputes over access to UK street furniture (lampposts etc.). Related deployments in some parts of the country are allegedly being delayed by as much as 2 years.

The UK Government has today officially launched their new £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which was originally announced during the 2018 Budget and aims to encourage an “outside-in” approach to building new ultrafast broadband ISP networks by focusing on helping to connect rural areas.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear has been fined £10,339.17 in Somerset UK after it admitted that some of its work, which involved deploying a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network around the small market town of Wellington, had failed to comply with the 1991 New Road and Street Works Act.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve wisely “taken over” rival ISP Sky Broadband’s 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in Swandicote (Derbyshire), which was originally built as part of a trial and is believed to have covered up to 5,000 local homes.

Ofcom has closed an enforcement programme that was setup to examine the Traffic Management practices of broadband ISPs and mobile operators, which was done to test compliance with the EU’s Open Internet Access (net neutrality) and Roaming Regulations. Instead they’ve published a framework to help providers “self-assess proactively.”

Telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT Group are understood to be considering a change of logo today, which our sources suggest will be based upon the one they originally trademarked all the way back in 2016 (pictured), except the new version will be mainly white and may have a glow around it.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre and UK ISP partner Vodafone have today announced that the first residents in the city of Stirling (Scotland) are now connecting to their new £10m and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network. The build is due to complete next year.

Residents of Craigavon in County Armagh (Northern Ireland) have vented anger at the quality of work and disruption caused after UK cable ISP Virgin Media began street works in the area. This forms part of a major expansion to extend the coverage of their TV and 500Mbps ultrafast broadband network.

Ofcom has today set out the final details of their new end-of-contract notification system (sent by text, email or letter) for UK customers of broadband ISPs, Pay TV, landline phone and mobile operators, which is designed to help tackle the so-called “loyalty penalty” and will keep consumers informed about the best available deals.
