The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents both alternative broadband ISPs, has announced that they hope to “tackle” the challenge of ensuring that new build UK homes can all benefit from the latest gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks by conducting a dedicated seminar.

Mobile network operator Three UK has managed to integrate Callsign‘s enhanced customer protection technology into their service, which is a customer authentication and ID verification system that could improve SIM-swap and call-divert fraud detection for users on their 3G and 4G network.

The Government’s £1.7bn publicly funded Broadband Delivery UK scheme, which has so far helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,076,552 extra premises since 2013, has today published its latest take-up data to the end of 2018. The good news is it continues to grow and boost coverage.

Despite a recent delay to Gigaclear’s state aid supported contract with the Superfast Essex (SFE) project (here), the rural UK ISP has today confirmed that some of the first homes in Uttlesford to benefit from their new 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network have now gone live in Birchanger.

SSE Enterprise Telecoms, which operates a 12,000km+ long fibre optic and Ethernet network across the United Kingdom, will today launch a new “cost-saving consumer broadband access product” for ISPs called Scalefast FTTC that could help providers to launch better Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based packages.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has once again come top of the latest Q1 2019 report from OpenSignal, which analysed crowd-sourced data over a 90 day period (starting 1st December 2018) to identify the 4G availability, mobile broadband speeds and latency performance of each UK operator.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that their “Fibre First” deployment of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology has now covered over 1.2 million UK premises. On top of that they’ve confirmed the next batch of 12 UK areas that will start to benefit over the next 12 months.

Liberty Global, the owner of UK cable operator Virgin Media and one that has traditionally shunned the idea of providing true wholesale access to their ultrafast broadband network (a mix of hybrid fibre coax and full fibre FTTP), is now alleged by one newspaper’s sources to be reviewing the idea again.

The UK Government is to publish a new ‘Online Harms White Paper‘ that proposes to establish a regulator for internet content, which among other things would be tasked with forcing websites to remove bad content (e.g. hate speech, fake news) and even blocking or imposing fines upon those that fail to comply.

Internet retail giant Amazon has joined SpaceX, Facebook, Telesat and British registered OneWeb to become the latest company with an eye toward launching a new global “low-latency, high-speed” broadband network, which will be supported by a huge constellation of 3,236 small Satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that Birmingham New Street is the first train station in the United Kingdom to be upgraded with their future 5G mobile technology as part of a live trial. Sadly a speedtest of the network struggled to get anywhere close to the often promoted Gigabit broadband speeds.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has completed the deployment of ASSIA’s CloudCheck software to their Wi-Fi Hub (Sagemcom F@st 5364) broadband router, which they claim can “proactively” improve the wireless (WiFi) performance of the device through “contextual analytics” and “machine-learning algorithms“.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today opened a new investigation that will examine BT’s conduct during the tender for the recent £50m Northern Ireland Public Sector Shared Network contract, which will consider whether or not the operator kept within the Significant Market Power (SMP) rules.

Worcester-based ISP Airband has announced that they’ve begun the state aid supported roll-out of a new hybrid wireless and fibre optic broadband network to cover 10 rural communities (dispersed clusters) in Herefordshire (England), which forms part of a contract with the wider Fastershire programme.

A new batch of independent data has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) style ultrafast broadband ISP networks are now available to 2,047,954 premises and Openreach (BT)’s infrastructure accounts for half of those (1,003,094 premises). Meanwhile the national roll-out from all operators is continuing to ramp-up.

Mobile operator VOXI, which is a Vodafone UK sub-brand that was launched in 2017 and initially targeted at people aged 25 and under (e.g. students), has informed ISPreview.co.uk that it will today remove “age-gating” from its platform so that “anyone can purchase a voxi contract.”
