Broadband and phone provider TalkTalk appears to be preparing to take on rival ISPs by upping its game with the forthcoming launch of a new “Super Router“, which will be based off the latest Huawei HG635 hardware and appears to feature the most recent Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable wifi wireless networking specification (802.11ac).

A new Vodafone UK commissioned report from consulting firm Frontier Economics has accused BT of being in breach of its regulatory commitments by allegedly making profits of nearly £5bn more than the level that Ofcom is claimed to deem acceptable.

Remember, remember. The.. fourth of November? The Fibre-to-the-Home Councils Global Alliance has declared that today is officially the inaugural “Gimme Fibre Day“, which has been setup as an annual event to help promote the benefits of true ultrafast fibre optic (FTTH) connectivity as the “only future-proof solution” for broadband Internet access.

The latest anecdotal survey of big fixed line home broadband ISP performance in the United Kingdom for October 2013 has found that the average download speed is now 16.842Mbps and the average upload speed topped 2.896Mbps. Both results have held fairly steady since September.

The UK Government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, told a debate in the House of Commons yesterday that “half” of the local Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) projects were running “ahead of schedule” and thus there was still a strong possibility of reaching the original target for 90% to be within reach of superfast broadband (25Mbps+) in 2015.

Last week’s announcement that O2 UK were to close their wholesale division (BE/O2Wholesale) in February 2014 (here) has naturally caused problems for ISPs that offer broadband via the platform. Aquiss have now become one of the first to confirm the discontinuation of related services pending a replacement.

The latest Q3-2013 analysis of global broadband tariffs has found that the cost of slower copper based (ADSL) broadband ISP services has increased in Western Europe. Meanwhile the Megabit price of superfast fibre optic and cable (FTTH, FTTC, DOCSIS3 etc.) based technologies has become even cheaper.

The final RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband speeds in London, which conducted more than 86,000 tests across the city, has confirmed that EE remain the fastest operator for mobile Internet performance thanks to their comparatively advanced 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) network. By contrast O2, Three UK and Vodafone were well off the pace.

BT Group’s latest Q3-2013 (calendar) results reveal that the operators consumer and business ISP divisions have grown their fixed line broadband subscriber base by +156k in the quarter to total 6.961m (up from +95k added in Q2 and +136k in Q1), which includes 1.7m superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +195k in Q3 vs +197k added in Q2).

A new study from uSwitch, which is based on data from 1.4 million anecdotal Internet speed tests (conducted between April and September 2013), has revealed that Telford in Shropshire (England) is the fastest of the top 50 biggest UK towns and cities for broadband speed with an average download of 22.99Mbps (just below the government’s 24Mbps+ definition for “superfast“).

Tonight’s episode of the BBC’s popular consumer affairs TV show, Watchdog, took BTOpenreach’s “promises to keep the nation connected” to task and heavily criticised the group for failing to fix broadband and phone problems and for not being directly contactable.

BTOpenreach has announced that consumers who order a new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR), ISDN2 or fully unbundled / LLU (MPF) copper line product through their broadband ISP should, from 1st November 2013, benefit from a slightly sooner engineer visit for their installation.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has had one of its “Hottest Half Price” Facebook promotions for their “TV, broadband, fibre and calls” bundle banned after it claimed that the triple-play package was priced from just £7.75 a month, although it failed to mention the line rental charge.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again banned two Virgin Media broadband adverts for promoting “unlimited downloads” with “no caps” on data usage because the ISPs Traffic Management Policy (TMP) was found to contradict this by imposing an “immoderate” restriction on customers service speeds.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that its SmartCall service, which allows Smartphone (Android and iPhone) users with a Virgin Phone Line to use the unlimited calls from their talk plan on their mobile (so long as you have a wifi internet connection), is now finally available to use after first launching one year ago.

It took a while but Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally added ten of the UK’s top pay-tv entertainment channels (e.g. Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Discover) to their unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service – NOW TV – and it only costs from £4.99 a month (introductory price).
