Internet video streaming provider Disney+ has followed the recent crackdown on password sharing (here) by hitting UK customers with a fresh round of annual price hikes, which are due to all be introduced from 17th October 2024 for new customers and 21st November 2024 for existing ones.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband’s phone (Sky Talk) and Sky Mobile service, including those with a phone service via NOW Broadband (NOW TV), have – due to the current conflict – been given the ability to make free calls and texts between the UK (inc. Ireland) and Lebanon until the end of 2024.

The Oldham Council in Greater Manchester has ordered broadband operator IX Wireless (supported by UK ISP 6Gi / Opus Broadband) to “temporarily … stop work across the borough” due to “safety concerns“. The operator had been deploying large metal masts for their fibre-fed fixed wireless broadband network, which has recently attracted protests.

Mobile network operator 1p Mobile appears to have recently reduced the “minimum spend requirement” period on their classic Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans from at least £10 every 90-days, to £10 every 60-days. But the provider’s Terms & Conditions appear to be confused about when this change was actually introduced.

The industry-led One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo) has issued a progress update on its work to support Ofcom’s new One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which started to go live last month and aims to make it easier for consumers to change broadband ISP. A total of 100,000 switch orders have been placed since launch, albeit with only 32,000 successful completions.

Some of ISPreview’s readers have spotted that internet provider Home Telecom, which is part of the wider Telecom Acquisitions (TAL) group that also has an established strategic partnership with TalkTalk, appears to be selling broadband plans that are “Powered by Virgin Media” (VMO2). But seemingly only in FTTP areas that have been built for nexfibre.

Energy and communications provider Utility Warehouse (UW or Telecom Plus) recently boosted their existing range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages by finally adding a top 944Mbps tier, which costs just £40 per month on an 18-month term.

The official website that was setup last year to support the proposed mobile mega-merger between Vodafone and Three UK – https://vodafoneandthree.uk – mysteriously vanished at the start of this week and has yet to return after several days of waiting. But the issue is more likely to be an awkward technical one than a sign of something more dramatic, we think.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) in England has published some of the initial results from a project it undertook with Birmingham City University (BCU) and other local authorities, which mapped 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage in the County – helping to reveal areas of both poor and no signal.

The Growing Mid Wales programme and network analyst firm Streetwave have used their ongoing mobile connectivity study in Ceredigion (Wales) to reveal what sort of impact tourism has on mobile broadband performance in seaside towns (there’s a “major” drop in data speeds) and thus where EE, Vodafone, Three UK and O2 may need to upgrade.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today announced that they will open a new office within the business community at Maxim Park in Lanarkshire (Scotland) during early 2025, which will ultimately become home to around 350 employees that are currently based at their Bellshill office in the same region.

Oxfordshire-based alternative network operator Zzoomm, which has built their 2Gbps speed full fibre broadband network to cover 202,000 premises (RFS) in England, have today reported that they’ve achieved 20% take-up in a further four of their deployed market towns and often only 15-months after build completion.

Broadband ISP BT (EE) has this morning announced that their new scam protection service, which is based on Hiya’s technology and was introduced to their IP-based Digital Voice (phone) customers in May 2024, has blocked more than 2.4 million scam calls and almost 17.7 million spam calls since its introduction.

Alternative network operator and ISP Brsk, which has deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines to cover “over” 676,000 homes and is in the process of being merged into Netomnia (here), has today announced that their full fibre network is being expanded to reach 25,000 premises in Salford (Greater Manchester).

DrayTek Vulnerable Routers Exposed to the Internet UK and World

A new report by Forescout Research has identified 14 new security vulnerabilities in 24 models of DrayTek‘s popular Vigor routers, which is a familiar name in the UK broadband ISP world. One of the vulnerabilities even has a Common Vulnerability Score (CVSS) of 10 out of 10 and over 704,000 routers were found exposed online in 168 countries.

Hampshire-based UK ISP Onestream, which sells broadband packages using Openreach’s national full fibre network, has complained about the poor performance of the new One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which aims to make it easier for consumers to change ISP. But this is currently failing on 56% of requests to join the provider.

The Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has ordered broadband and telecoms operator Sure (Guernsey) Limited to refund a total of £115,360 to customers of their wholesale leased line services, which occurred after the regulator found they had “overcharged” for the service between 1st January 2021 and 31st July 2022.
