A new report from the Wireless Broadband Alliance, which examined the levels of urban and rural connectivity across 8 major countries, has found that London is the most connected city (7% of citizens are unconnected) but 1.75bn citizens in the world’s richest countries (by GDP) remain unconnected.

Mobile operator Orange has announced that they intend to reduce their 4% stake in the embattled UK telecoms giant BT, possibly pushing it down to just 1.33%. The stake itself was created as part of BT’s £12.5bn merger with EE, which was previously owned by Orange and Deutsche Telecom.

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today agreed a new supply deal with residential property developer A2Dominion, which means that homes across their housing portfolio in London and the South East of England will soon gain access to the provider’s ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB/P) network.

A further 2,500 homes and businesses in Buckinghamshire look set to benefit from faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services after the Buckinghamshire County Council and Buckinghamshire Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (BTVLEP) confirmed an £800,000 funding boost.

Small and medium sized business customers who take one of the Infinity (FTTC/P) broadband packages from BT Business will now also receive access to the operator’s BTSport TV app for the duration of the contract. But it’s only for personal use, not for commercial or business broadcasting.

London-based Satellite operator Avanti has officially entered the Mobile connectivity market (i.e. providing capacity for WiFi and 4G Mobile networks to aircraft, ships etc.) for the first time by securing a 2-year contract worth around £3.5 million ($4.5m) with an unnamed partner.

The Liverpool City Council has kept the expansion of Virgin Media’s ultrafast cable broadband and TV network on hold since February 2017 because of “serious issues” (damage to highways, poor reinstatement, site safety etc.) with the street works being conducted by contractors.

The incumbent telecoms and broadband provider for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, is reportedly aiming to be one of the first cities in the UK to switch-off their ageing copper telephone lines. Instead they’d become reliant upon their new “full fibre” (FTTP/H) network for communication services.

Historically hybrid-fibre broadband services like VDSL (FTTC) rely on a mix of fibre optic and twisted-pair copper cables, although signal attenuation over the latter always ends up reducing performance over distance and the new G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) technology is particularly susceptible.

Openreach (BT) engineers have been accused of “decimating” the picturesque landscape of two rural villages on the boundary of the North York Moors National Park, where the operator has been installing 15 new telegraph poles in order to bring “superfast broadband” to remote homes.

Thousands of extra homes in the county of Wiltshire (England) look set to benefit after the local authority awarded a total of £3 million in extra public funding to BT and Gigaclear, which are both tasked with expanding the reach of their 100Mbps+ capable “fibre broadband” networks into rural areas.

Ofcom has used crowd-sourced data collected from 4,288 users of their Smartphone app to reveal that 72% of users in UK urban areas were satisfied with their overall mobile service, although this falls to just 56% in rural areas. Elsewhere WiFi gave the best YouTube speed (average of 6.6Mbps).

The telecoms regulator has today hit mobile operator Three UK with a fine of £1,890,000 after its network was temporarily unable to provide customers in Kent, Hampshire and parts of London with access to the emergency services (police, fire etc.), which wasn’t helped by reliance on a single data centre.

The Labour Leader for North Swindon, Jim Grant, has called on the council to stop spending public money on the construction of a superfast (24Mbps+) fixed wireless broadband network from UKB Networks because it is now in “direct competition” with BT and Virgin Media’s new “fibre” networks.
