BT has today reintroduced their earlier summer discounts, which means that unlimited standard (up to 17Mbps) and superfast (up to 38Mbps BTInfinity) broadband packages have been cut to just £5 and £10 per month respectively. Sainsbury’s shopping vouchers worth up to £125 have also been added.

The Government reports that hundreds of buses, trams and trains in 9 cities across the United Kingdom have so far been equipped with free public Wi-Fi as part of their “SuperConnected Cities” initiative, with 3 million unique users making regular use of the service.

The UK Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, has said that he is a “sceptic” of proposal that BT could be split from control of their national broadband and phone network (Openreach) and warned that it has “lots of potential to backfire.” Penny for your thoughts Ofcom.

The European Commission has today announced new changes that are designed to encourage large institutional investors, such as insurers and pension funds, to put an extra £15bn or so into the development of infrastructure projects (broadband, roads, energy etc.) around Europe.

The CEO of Metronet UK, Elliot Mueller, has described a recent report from Deloitte (here), which warned that slow and patchy broadband was leaving smaller businesses in Manchester at a disadvantage, as being “fundamentally wrong and damaging” after it ignored alternative connectivity methods.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project has today announced that they’ve helped to put an additional 504,352 premises within reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, which equates to coverage of 79% across Wales.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk will today reduce the cost of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable unlimited “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) package to just £5 per month for the entire 18 month contract term (£17.50 per month thereafter). A free connection and “Super Router” are also included.

As expected Virgin Media (Liberty Global), the national urban-focused UK cable operator, has today launched another “free” increase to their subscribers broadband speeds up to a maximum of 200Mbps (Megabits per second), but it’s not as much as had been expected and uploads remain unchanged.

Analyst firm IDATE recently updated its World FTTx Database, which provides for an interesting snapshot of the different fixed line technologies that countries around the world are using for “superfast broadband“. Suffice to say that Europe and the UK love hybrid-fibre (VDSL / FTTC).

As expected Sky Broadband has today echoed last week’s news from TalkTalk (here) and Cityfibre, which confirmed that the first trial customers are now live on their joint “ultrafast” 940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network in the city of York (North Yorkshire).

Local residents and the North Swindon MP have raised concerns about the general feasibility and size of masts being used as part of a £1.9m project with UKB Networks, which will push “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 99.4% of premises by 2016 via a fixed wireless 4G (LTE) network.

Earlier this week BT announced plans to make a minimum broadband speed of 5-10Mbps universally available by around 2020 (here) and one part of that involved the use of Long Reach VDSL2 (FTTC), which could help bring “higher speed broadband to hard-to-reach communities“.
