A new study from financial firm Deloitte has warned that slow / patchy broadband connectivity could be leaving small and medium sized businesses in the North West of England at a disadvantage, particularly those in the more urban areas of Liverpool and Manchester.

Remember White Space technology? In case you’ve forgotten, it allows the gaps in radio spectrum that exist between Digital Terrestrial TV (470MHz to 790MHz) channels to be harnessed and used for broadband or other communication services. Sadly developers have struggled to meet Ofcom’s licensing requirements, so the regulator has had to cut a few corners.

Recently the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK office gave an update on the progress of their 7 Market Test Pilots, which are testing alternative solutions (fibre optic, satellite, wireless etc.) for bringing broadband to remote rural areas. The good news is that early customers appear to be happy.

The Managing Director of Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has highlighted one of the most frustrating and often overlooked problems with BTOpenreach’s roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “fibre broadband” services. When the service is technically available, but due to a capacity shortage you can’t get it.

The United Kingdom’s national telecoms regulator has today published its final assessment on their much delayed plans to hike the annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands, which has seen the costs come down again.. but only a little.

The first hints that something significant was about to happen surfaced in July 2015 (here) and now BT’s Consumer division has just confirmed that they intend to deploy the Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) Internet addressing standard across their entire network by December 2016.

Akamai has today published their latest Q2 2015 State of the Internet (SotI) report to reveal that the world’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 5.1Mbps (up from 5Mbps in Q1), which compares with 11.8Mbps in the United Kingdom (up from 11.6Mbps). The UK’s overall country ranking has also improved from 21nd to 19th.

Alternative network providers that make use of BTOpenreach’s pricey Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) solution, which allows ISPs to share the operators network infrastructure in order to deploy new services (e.g. faster broadband), can now access an up-to-date map of the overhead network (telegraph poles).

It’s been many months since a new state aid supported Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract was signed in Wiltshire (England) to extend the local roll-out of BT’s superfast broadband (24Mbps+) network beyond the current target of 91% by March 2016 and today we’re finally given the details.

As expected TalkTalk has confirmed that the first trial customers are now live on their joint 940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network in the city of York, which is being built alongside Sky Broadband and Cityfibre. An early 2016 commercial launch has also been set.

Budget ISP PlusNet, which have this year made a habit of removing useful features from their service (e.g. 24/7 support calls, 20Mbps fibre upload speeds etc.), has now followed the big providers by removing free UK weekend and or evening calls from their broadband and phone bundles.

The telecoms regulator has published its latest quarterly report into the volume of complaints experienced by all of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband, phone, mobile and TV providers. As usual the news is good for some providers (e.g. Sky Broadband, Virgin Media) and bad for others (e.g. EE).

As predicted yesterday BT has today announced a new roll-out plan for delivering faster broadband (at least 5-10Mbps) connections to the hardest to reach final 5% of premises in the United Kingdom (mostly rural homes) and an aim to push “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps G.fast to 10 million premises.

A new BT commissioned report from telecoms analyst firm Analysys Mason has perhaps unsurprisingly found that the take-up and availability of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) connectivity in the United Kingdom is ahead of Spain, Germany, Italy and France, and will remain there until at least 2020.

Professor Andrew Ellis of Aston University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science has once again warned that the Internet “could be on the brink … of a capacity crunch“, which might force ISPs to throttle your broadband and it could happen within the next 8 years. Best get that tinfoil hat.
