Mobile operator EE (BT) has today reported that mobile broadband (4G, 5G) usage related to internet video game traffic on their network has increased by 31% over the past six months, while the number of people enjoying mobile gaming also increase by 18% during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Network Rail, which is responsible for running Britain’s railways, has revealed they will auction off 10,000 miles worth of their old trackside cable network (much of this still runs off legacy copper lines and is in need of an upgrade). The £1bn auction could help to support the UK rollout of gigabit broadband and 5G mobile.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has opened a new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) focused Test and Integration Lab at its Newbury technology campus, which will help to support their future plans for a commercial rollout of the 4G and 5G mobile supporting technology in rural parts of England and Wales.

Mobile operator Vodafone and supply partner Ericsson have begun a new trial that uses aerial drones and Lidar-based 3D technology to speed up network planning and site upgrades for new 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks, such as by using them to conduct surveys of difficult to reach rural and city centre sites.

The latest April 2021 Mobile Network Experience Report from Opensignal has measured the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance of all four primary operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to determine which delivers the best connectivity. Overall EE leads the pack, but it’s not a clear-cut victory in every category.

A new study has analysed 6,148 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 230 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which found that the United Kingdom has seen its position fall from 59th last year to 78th in 2021, with an average price of USD $1.42 per GB (up from $1.39).

Mobile operator Three UK has today kicked off what they’re calling the “Big Tech Giveaway,” which as the name suggests means that new customers taking one of their latest unlimited data (mobile broadband) tariffs and selected handset bundles will also receive a free gadget – ranging from smartwatches to smart speakers etc.

A new report from mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has used the data they gathered for their previous H2 2020 study (here) to rank 16 of the United Kingdom’s largest and fastest cities by their average (median) download speed on 4G and 5G networks. Liverpool came top with an aggregate speed of 43.6Mbps.

Six street markets in the London borough of Westminster, including Church Street and Berwick Street among others, claim to have deployed a new “superfast” public WiFi network to help local traders, customers and visitors get online via a “gigabit-speed outdoor wireless” broadband connection.

A lot of UK people have tried tethering their Smartphone’s mobile broadband (4G, 5G) connection to a laptop by using the ‘Wi-Fi Hotspot‘ feature, but not everybody is aware that you can do the same thing by using a wired USB-C cable. As a bit of fun we decided to find out if tethering via a wired link is any better than a wireless one.

Gigabit broadband ISP Virgin Media has reported a week of extreme variations in UK internet traffic, which saw both the lowest level of upstream traffic in 2021 occur on Tuesday and then, the very next day, one of the highest peaks in downstream traffic hit their network (thanks to another massive Call of Duty update).

A new survey of 4,000 UK mobile phone users by consumer magazine Which? has claimed that consumers on SIM-Only plans and contracts are “wasting” an average of 14GB (GigaBytes) of mobile broadband data each month. In short, some people could save money by switching to a plan with a smaller allowance.

Existing customers with the mobile division of supermarket giant ASDA have been told to request a new SIM card by the 15th September 2021, or risk being unable to use the service. The move follows a decision last year (here) to swap their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) supplier from EE (BT) to Vodafone.

Mobile operator Smarty has this week announced that they’ve refreshed their range of SIM-Only mobile plans by giving them all bigger data allowances (mobile broadband) and often for no extra cost. For example, their entry-level plan previously only included 1GB (GigaByte) of data for £6 per month, but you’ll now get 4GB for that.

Mobile operator Three UK today reports that they’ve “slashed” their 4G and 5G powered unlimited home broadband prices in order to help people who are stuck at home. Prices now start from as little as £17 per month for “superfast” 4G broadband, and £24 per month for “ultrafast” 5G – “with the average download speed of 100Mbps.”
