Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve started to deploy the newly released 700MHz spectrum band for use on their latest ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, albeit initially limited to areas where they perceive there to be a case of “customer need” for it.

First they launched it, then they “put a short pause” on the deployment and said it was just a trial, before adding that it would arrive in “early 2021“, which in January 2021 became “later this year” (here). Mobile operator Three UK has now indicated that eSIM support for 4G and 5G handsets will not arrive until 2022.

Mobile operator iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone) has apologised to 24,000 of their UK customers after a billing fail resulted in them sending out an “outstanding balance notification in error,” which warned recipients that their service would be “suspended until the full outstanding balance has been paid.”

Opensignal’s latest Q3 2021 Mobile Network Experience Report, which uses crowd-sourced data to measure the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance of all four primary operators (EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK) to determine which delivers the best service, has given most of the awards to EE. Except when only looking at 5G.

Mobile operator giffgaff has informed UK customers that they’re going to be boosting the data (mobile broadband) allowances across most of their 4G and ultrafast 5G based “golden goodybag” plans from 22nd October 2021, which will be applied to both new and existing customers at no extra cost.

Last week’s cabinet reshuffle saw Matt Warman MP being somewhat unexpectedly sacked from the role of ‘Minister for Digital Infrastructure‘ within the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS). Replacements are normally appointed within 24-48 hours, but six long days have nearly passed without any clarity.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced that they’re bringing forward their target for achieving Net Zero by 15 years (i.e. removing as many carbon emissions as they produce), moving it from 2045 to 2030 for their own operational emissions. But their supply chain and customer emissions won’t follow until 2040.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a general comparison of 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) speeds and availability across 13 of the United Kingdom’s key cities, which sees Glasgow take the top spot on an aggregated average (median) download speed of 144.3Mbps and availability of 28.3%.

UK-based Lycamobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) with operations in several countries, has today announced that they’ll invest £250m over the next 3-years in order to “transform” into a “digital service provider delivering diverse, multimedia experiences that put changing consumer expectations first.”

Ookla, which runs Speedtest.net, has today revealed more data about 5G mobile speeds and availability across the UK. Overall, the country delivered average (median) 5G download speeds of 167.38Mbps (15.91Mbps upload), but availability is still low at 10.2% (17.9% on EE, 10.3% on Vodafone, 6.4% on Three UK and 5.4% on O2).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they will begin rolling out the new 700MHz band for use on their ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) network from October 2021. Redditch, Morecambe and Cramlington will be amongst the first UK towns to benefit from the extra spectrum.

Vodafone UK and WPI Economics have called on the government to help fix the climate by putting the rollout of 5G (mobile broadband), IoT and other digital connectivity at the core of its forthcoming Net Zero strategy – it’s claimed this could reduce the UK’s overall emissions by up to 4% a year (17.4 million tonnes of CO2e).

The UK Government has today invested £4m to support a new 2-year project (DCIA) trial, which aims to make it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings, such as CCTV poles, traffic lights, lampposts, bus shelters and so forth.

Mobile operator Three UK, which last year said that they planned to “retain” EU roaming at no extra cost “regardless of Brexit negotiations“, has today followed the U-turns from rivals EE (BT) and Vodafone by announcing their intention to reintroduce roaming charges on texts, data (mobile broadband) and calls.

Mobile operator Three UK has launched new discounts and devices across their range of 4G and 5G based unlimited Home Broadband packages, which now start at just £14 per month for 24-months of service on their 4G plan or £22 for 5G (the 5G price is largely unchanged). You can optionally also bundle-in various gadget gifts.

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) sibling of Vodafone UK, will later today introduce a new range of discounts across their plans and also boost the data allowances for mobile broadband usage. But these will only be available to order until 7th October 2021.

Mobile operator 1p Mobile have begun to inform their UK customers of a change to their service that will see a new “minimum monthly spend” requirement of £2.50 being introduced from 1st October 2021. Customers who have set an auto-top-up will thus also see their minimum threshold go from £2 to £3.
