UK easy Group to Launch easySim for Low Cost Mobile Travel Data

A new mobile operator called easySim.global, which is part of the familiar Stelios-owned group of brands (e.g. easyJet, easyMoney, easyCar) and last existed around a decade ago as easyMobile before vanishing, appears set to launch this summer. But the focus this time will be on giving people low cost travel data all around the world.

One of Austria’s top mobile operators, spusu, has today announced that they’ve launched in the United Kingdom with the aim of challenging the likes of giffgaff, VOXI and SMARTY. As part of that they’re offering customers a discounted unlimited plan (calls, texts and 5G data / mobile broadband) from just £19.90 per month.

Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a confusing new study that measured the network performance of operators that have combined their mobile and broadband ISP businesses. Overall, the study found that the fastest download speeds by a combined provider were seen by Virgin Media O2 (138Mbps average).

EE Deploys 411 New Small Cells to Boost UK 4G and 5G Mobile

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they’ve deployed another 411 small cells (tiny base stations) on UK street furniture and buildings in order to boost the coverage and speed of their 4G based mobile broadband network (total of 611), which they claim allows customers to “take advantage of download speeds of up to 300Mbps.”

RWG Mobile, which describes itself as being the nation’s only “dedicated, all-Wales mobile network provider”, has today announced that they’ve finally made 5G based mobile broadband connectivity available to all of their consumer and business customers, “at no extra cost“. Most other operators did this a while ago.

Gov Launch New £7m Fund to Test UK Rural Broadband Solutions UPDATE

The UK Government will today launch a new £7 million fund as one part of their wider Unleashing Rural Opportunity strategy, which will be used to “test out new ways” of bringing together satellite, wireless (FWA and mobile) and fixed line broadband ISP solutions to help “support farmers and tourism businesses” in rural areas.

53% of UK Mobile Users See Average Downloads Below 30Mbps

New data from mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has revealed that 53.3% of UK Smartphone users achieve average mobile broadband download speeds below 30Mbps (sub-“superfast” level), while 14% suffer sub-10Mbps downloads and 4.7% of users spend over 5% of their time with no mobile signal at all.

EE UK Pilots 3G Switch Off in Warrington from 17th July 2023

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they will conduct an initial pilot of their 3G withdrawal scheme in the Cheshire (England) town of Warrington from the week of 17th July 2023. This will be followed by their national programme, which aims to move customers off the old data (mobile broadband) network by early 2024.

Ofcom Spring 2023 Study – Gigabit Broadband Covers 73% of UK

Ofcom’s Spring 2023 report into UK fixed line broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 48% of the UK (up from 42% in Sept 2022), while 73% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 70%) and 73-82% of premises can get outdoor 5G cover from at least one operator (up from 67-78%).

BT Slows FTTP Build as Cover Grows to 10.27 Million UK Premises UPDATE

BT Group has today published their latest Q4 FY23 (quarterly) results to March 2023, which saw Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow to cover 10.274 million premises (up by 702k in the quarter vs 810k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G Ready customer base to 9.12 million (up from 8.5m).

Vodafone Top 1.22m UK Broadband Customers and Cuts 11,000 Jobs

Vodafone UK has released their latest Q4 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed line broadband ISP base grew strongly to total 1.223 million customers (up by 65k in the quarter vs 47k in Q3 FY23), while their mobile base also now totals 17.92 million (up by 118k vs 259k in the previous quarter). But job cuts galore.

Councils Warn Digital Divide Holding Some Back in Broadband Slow Lane

The Local Government Association, which represents councils from across England and Wales, has published a “new” report that warns of how poorer households are being left behind in the “broadband slow lane“, with access to fixed broadband being 15 percentage points lower in the most deprived areas than in the least deprived.

West Midlands Named Best Connected UK Region for 5G Cover

A new report from telecoms analyst firm Umlaut, which analysed geographic 5G mobile coverage across the UK’s Combined Authority areas, has identified the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) region as being the best connected in the UK, with 65% of locations having access from at least one operator.
