A new report from the Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), an industry think-tank, has found that UK’s rollout of gigabit-capable broadband and 5G mobile connectivity would benefit from improvements in communication, collaboration and consistency between local authorities and the telecoms industry.

Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net service, has published their latest Q1-Q2 2023 (H1) study into the performance of 5G based mobile broadband networks in the United Kingdom, which once again finds that Three UK continues to deliver the fastest median download speed (265.75 Mbps).

Customers of EE‘s mobile and home broadband ISP packages may like to know that the UK network operator has now joined forces with NVIDIA to launch a new range of “great value cloud gaming offerings“, which include membership of the ‘GeForce NOW’ cloud gaming service (access to over 1,600 games).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed an alternative way of solving the debate over whether WiFi or mobile broadband (5G) should benefit from the extra capacity (i.e. faster speeds) available in the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) – “hybrid sharing“.

The latest research from Ookla, which operates the popular broadband connection testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that Smartphone users using 5G based mobile broadband networks suffer between 6% to 11% higher battery drain than for those using 4G.

State-owned ISP JT (Jersey Telecom) has announced that they are planning to invest £80 million in order to roll out a new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network across Jersey (English Channel Island), which is to be deployed using Ericsson’s technology (radio kit etc.).

Benchmarking firm Opensignal, which specialises in testing the performance of mobile networks, has published new research that reveals how the UK compares with the rest of the world for 5G based mobile broadband speeds (downloads and uploads) and availability. Suffice to say, we sit at the wrong end of the table.

The National Farmers Union recently published the results of their latest annual survey of 814 members across England and Wales, which among other things found that 36% can now access “supefast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 20% two years ago), while 80% had access to 4G on their mobiles and 10% could get 5G.

Finnish telecoms firm Nokia has hit a new milestone in 5G based mobile broadband speeds – when setup as a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network – using millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum, which saw them successfully achieve sustained average downloads of over 2Gbps (Gigabits / sec) at a distance of 10.86km.

Vodafone has today announced that they’ve become the first mobile operator in the UK to launch a package for customers based off their new 5G Standalone (SA) technology – called ‘5G Ultra‘, which promises faster mobile broadband speeds and better performance in other areas. Mobile operator EE has revealed that 125 network upgrades are being installed on temporary 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) masts at locations across the country, which are designed to complement existing permanent sites and to increase network capacity to help manage a “huge surge in seasonal demand.”

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that British people have had to fork out approximately £539m in “unexpected roaming” costs over the past 12 months since most mobile operators reintroduced EU roaming charges.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has confirmed that they’ve signed a new 3-year extended supplier agreement with Nokia, which will see them continue deploying and upgrading their UK 5G network using Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment (Airscale) from the Finnish company – focused on delivering “increased reliability, performance, and capacity.”
