Ookla, which operates the popular internet Speedtest.net service, has warned that median 5G performance (mobile broadband download speeds) are declining in many early launch markets like the United Kingdom, where speeds fell by -38.26Mbps (Megabits per second) year-on-year.

Network operator Neos Networks has today been named as the preferred bidder for Network Rail’s Project Reach, which among other things could see them invest in the design and build of a new trackside fibre optic communications network. This could also help to improve UK gigabit broadband and 5G mobile coverage.

Consumer broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that their ultrafast 5G based (mobile broadband) network is expanding into more rural parts of the UK, reaching national parks, seasonal hotspots and over 500 smaller towns and villages. They’re also testing new technologies, such as mobile via LEO satellites.

Mobile network operator Smarty has quietly added the ‘SMARTY Social Tariff‘ to their website, which as the name suggests is a low-cost unlimited data (mobile broadband), calls and texts (SMS) plan that is only available to those on eligible state benefits and costs just £12 per month.

A new BT (EE) trial, which deployed new mobile network infrastructure in order to help Yorkshire Water connect with smart IoT sensors to remotely monitor the water courses that feed Scar House reservoir, has also helped up to 1,000 homes, businesses and visitors in Nidderdale to access a 4G based mobile broadband network.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has recommitted to continue their existing policy of retaining inclusive EU roaming as a standard feature on their plans, which they claim could be helping to save an average family of four around £100 during a two-week trip away. Across the UK, this could be saving as much as £3m per week throughout 2022.

Mobile operator Three UK has confirmed that they too have joined EE (here) and Vodafone (here) in starting to rollout their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) service on the London Underground (tube trains), with Archway, Tufnell Park, and Notting Hill Gate stations this week becoming the first to be upgraded.

Mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that customers using the Notting Hill Gate station on the London Underground have started to receive their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) signal. The tunnels from Holland Park to Queensway (Central Line) and Archway to Kentish Town (Northern Line) will follow by the weekend.

The BT Group has today published their latest Q3 FY23 results to December 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 9.57 million premises (up by 810k in the quarter vs 805k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G customer based to 8.5 million (up from 8.157m).

Mobile operator EE has announced that they’ve upgraded their new 4G mobile network on the London Underground by enabling the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity, which will initially only be live across three stations – Archway and Tufnell Park (Northern line), as well as Notting Hill Gate (Central line).

Vodafone UK has published their latest quarterly (Q3 FY23) results, which states that their fixed broadband ISP base saw strong growth to total 1.158 million customers (up by 47k in the quarter vs 39k in Q2 FY23), while their mobile base also grew again to total 17.802 million (up by 259k vs 321k in the previous quarter).

Mobile operator Three UK has today launched a new range of ‘Three Your Way‘ plans, which allows new customers to choose to pay for their device over a 12, 24 or even 36-month period, as well as to choose one of three, 12 or 24-month Airtime plans, each of which comes with their own range of benefits.

A new trial has been launched by telecoms giant BT (EE) and Stratospheric Platforms (SPL) – funded by Innovate UK, which aims to harness High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) aircraft, usually located above commercial air traffic in the Earth’s stratosphere, in order to extend 5G (mobile broadband) coverage into remote rural areas.

Mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that the first “trial” customers are now able to connect to one of the UK’s first deployments of an ultrafast cloud-based 5G Standalone (SA) network, which has been built across parts of several cities including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Bath, Glasgow and Birmingham.
